Marshall stared down at the only girl he had ever loved, and the only one he ever will. Fiona stared back up at him, her head resting in his lap, a small, weak smile gracing her lips. Tears trailed down her face, flowing freely, as did the blood trickling out of the corner of her mouth. She spoke, her voice barely a whisper, “Marshall…I’m sorry, I’m not strong enough to hold on any longer.”

He clenched his teeth, trying his hardest not to cry. “Don’t you dare say that! You will live, you are strong enough.” His voice cracked at the last word, betraying how much he was trying to resist breaking down and drinking her blood while sobbing. It was hard being a vampire, having normal bloodlust and living for eternity, but when you found the one you loved, you loved them forever, and the scent of their blood was even stronger. Gulping, he let a small tear trail from the corner of his eye, and flow down his high cheekbone. “I won’t lose you Fiona, I refuse to let that happen.”

Sadness showed in her eyes, and she placed a shaky and gentle hand on the cheek with the tear stain. “You can’t do anything about it, my death is inevitable. Whether I die now, or in fifty years, one day I will die, and you will have to go on without me. It’s better to get it over with now, give the wound more time to heal.”

Marshall overlapped her hand with his, a gentle caress, and found that tears were streaming down his face as well. He choked on a sob, unable to say the words ‘I love you,’ to her one last time, but she knew what he wanted to say. Weakly whispering the words “I love you too,” Fiona drew her last breath, a raspy one at that, and closed her eyes, letting the eternal sleep take over.

Sobbing even harder now, he let go of her body, and stood, with his head hanging. He couldn’t deal with her body right now, it looked too much like her, but at the same time, it looked completely different. Pale, cold, limp, lifeless, but wearing a smile that he loved so much, and her golden hair still vibrantly colored. He walked away, slowly, shuffling his feet, and tears dripping to the ground.

In the last one hundred years since Fiona had died, Marshall hadn’t done much. At first, he tried to go with life, and live normally. But he was always numb, not feeling anything, or too depressed to say anything. Prince Gumball would stop by once in a while to check up on him, but he got tired of the vampire’s attitude, and soon stopped. Marshall kept Fiona’s room the same, not changing anything, and in the beginning, every night he would go and sit in there, and talk to her, as if she were there. But soon it became too much, and he left her door closed, not wanting to be reminded of the girl he once loved at all, and tried to forget her. It was hard though, when every night you woke up with nightmares of your loved one dying over and over again. He always would get up in the morning with bags under his eyes, and dried tear streaks down his face, yet he refused to even mention her name or look at a picture of her.

So it was rare, when upon this Friday morning Marshall decided to go to a local café to grab a cup of coffee, though he didn’t really like the stuff. He sat with his back to the counter, leaning against the chair, and his eyes closed. He heard the chitter chatter of everyday, normal human beings, and he didn’t really care so he didn’t pay attention. One thing startled him though, and that was the voice of the current person ordering her drink. “One small caramel macchiato please.” No, it couldn’t be, surely he was just imagining it. This had happened before, but his eyes widened in disbelief as he heard the barista replying back. The other person had heard them, he couldn’t be imagining it now, could he? Slowly turning around in his chair, a flash of golden blonde locks caught his eyes.

Marshall had never believed in reincarnation, he had lived too long for that. Seeing people die, violently or calmly, didn’t help the case of a skeptic. But Fiona was a believer, and liked to believe in the impossible. His lips formed the name, his voice a breathless sigh. “Fiona…” Impossibly, she turned around, as if she heard him. Their eyes met, clear sea blue with red rimmed black ones.

This girl who was alarmingly familiar to his past lover flashed him and easy and friendly smile. “Hi, can I help you?” Marshall snapped out of his trance and shook his head. “Sorry I didn’t mean to stare, you just seem like someone I knew long ago…” He gave her a small smile in return. She grabbed her ready order and sat down in front of him, across the table. “It’s fine. I’m Fiona, you are?” She still wore the smile on her face as she extended a hand across the table, to shake his. Matching her hand with his own, his smile grew a little less sad. “The name’s Marshall.”

Fiona’s smile turned into a grin. “Well Marshall, you seem like a nice lad. How about you walk me home, as repentance for rudely staring?” She laughed and stood, as did he. “Alright.” She seemed genuinely surprised at his reply and it showed on her face, but her expression melted into one of happiness. “Then this way we go!” Laughing even more, the girl with the soul of the only person Marshall had ever loved walked out the door, with him on her arm.
