My eyes widened, seeing Gabrielle's mouth pulled into a grim hard line, whilst her eyes glinted with a hidden deadliness. Time seemed to slow down, and I swear the beat of my frantic heart echoed around the room.
"Dammit Byker!" She suddenly cursed loudly, stomping her foot in frustration. Thoroughly confused as to what was happening I followed her every move still wary of the gun pointing at my head. Much to my relief, I saw her lower the weapon which could have stolen my life in a matter of seconds.
I was briefly aware that Brawn had arrived on the scene now, his eyebrows upturned as he inspected our positions. "What the heck is happening here?" He demanded. I looked to Gabrielle for an explanation, because truthfully I had no idea myself.
"The idiot scared the life out of me!" She spat.
"Hang on! You were the one who pushed me to the ground and put a gun to my head!" I argued, finally finding my voice. How on Earth had I scared her? She jumped me! She was about to shoot me!
If looks could kill, then I was positive I would have died in an explosion of hatred by the way Gabrielle was glaring at me. "What do you expect? You were creeping around the house and I can here sirens outside! For all I knew you could have been a police officer!"
"I called out your name for Christ sake!" I retaliated. "How on earth would you not know it was me?"
She opened her mouth to fire back another tart reply but Brawn interrupted before she could say anything and our argument could escalate. "Can you two stop bickering? We need to get out of here! Now!"
Reluctantly the pair of us fell silent; however I noticed that she was still glaring at me. I stuck my tongue out rather immaturely because for some reason I always felt like a little kid when I was around Gabrielle. We argued back and forth over the slightest detail. Hand on heart; I could honestly say I've never met anyone who riled me up more than Gabrielle - not even Emily when I had first met her.
It was strange to think that now I liked Emily way more than I should to be considered a simple friendship. The thought crossed my mind that maybe once I was used to Gabrielle there was a potential for a friendship, just like how I had grown close with Emily, but the mere thought of it caused me to shudder. We were just two different people that didn't mix well. It was like trying to freeze ice-cream on the sun - it was just never going to happen.
Brawn outstretched his arm, offering up his hand to help pull me up and I took it so I was immediately hauled to my feet.
"Come on," He instructed. "If we move now we'll be able to get to the car and driveway before the police come," The sirens were quickly approaching, and I was sceptical that we would be able to make it out unnoticed so I swiftly followed him out the door as I was aware of how limited time was. However I did manage to set aside few seconds to bump into Gabrielle's shoulder (accidently, of course) as we huddled out of the small flat.
As soon as we dived into the car I knew we were in trouble. The first police car swerved into the street just as Brawn ignited the car engine. I anxiously watched out of the wing mirror and saw the second car pull into the street and stop. Unfortunately for us, the first car seemed to have no intentions of stopping and its roar echoed behind us as it galloped down the street.
