Everything Changed

Chapter 2

As I slowly come to, I feel sharp, stabbing pains... Everywhere. My arms and my legs are really weak, and I have a pounding headache. I try to turn my head and I see the nurse getting a couple ice packs for me. Anna is sitting over in the chair on the other side of the room. As the nurse walks over to me, she hands me a few ice packs. I put one on my head, one on my arm, and one on my leg. I guess I really hurt my leg because a brace was on my knee.
"When will he be able to walk?" Anna asks
"Oh he can probably walk now, but with a little bit of a limp." The nurse says, filling out a couple forms. She rips them off of her notepad and hands them to me.
"You can go home if you want" says the nurse.
"I think I'll stay here with Anna. I'm not in any pain. I'll be fine" I say, and give a reassuring look over into Anna's worried eyes.
"Alright, I guess you can go, but don't try and make Max mad about anything."she says, hands me the slip if I wanted to go home, then closes the door after Anna and I leave.
"How long was I in there?" I ask Anna.
"All of gym and most of English. Don't worry about it though. I went to tell the teachers what happened and they were both playing name games. Why is that the only thing they do on the first day? I swear we all know everybody already." Anna says with a wink. "Anyways, there are twenty minutes left of English, but Max is in there. We shouldn't go in there while you're like that." She says motioning to my legs and arms.
"No way" I say
"So, we should probably hide somewhere... Oh I know... The perfect thing..." Anna says as she leads me across the hall and down a few hallways. I follow her along while limping. In a minute, we turned another corner and saw a brown door labelled staff room.
"No. Anna, we can't go in there!"
"Of course we can! All the teachers are teaching right now anyways. Let's just go and get a snack, then we can just leave since school will be over." Anna states as she walks in, no hesitations whatsoever. I follow her along hesitantly.
"Are you sure nobody's in there?" I whisper to Anna.
"What if we get caught?" I whisper again.
"Oh come on. It's empty."
We walk in very quietly. I look around and see couches, tables, and a big counter covered with food.
"Ok Zach just grab a few things and let's go." She says as she picks up almost one of everything.
"Don't you think they're going to notice some food is missing? I ask while I take one apple.
"Nah. I did this all the time at my old school. Nobody notices."
"Alright... Can we go? English should almost be over which means teachers will be coming." I ask while looking around.
"Ya ok. Let's go." Anna walks over to the door and opens it a little before she slams it shut.
"A teacher's coming! Hide!" Anna whispers as she runs over behind the couch and pulls a big plant to block her. I look around, don't see anywhere good to hide, but I hear footsteps coming closer and closer, so I panicked.
"Anna move over!" I whisper as I run (as fast as I can considering my limp) and crawl over the couch to get behind it, landing right beside Anna. Just in time, since M. Ortiz just walked in. Anna and I barely dare to breathe as he goes towards the table of food. A few more teachers walk in but I'm not sure who they are. Great. Since it's the last period of the day, the teachers will be hanging around for a while. Anna and I entertain ourselves by eating and playing chopsticks. Finally, around an hour later, all the teachers cleared out. We waited a little longer, until the lights went out, so we were sure nobody was left in the school before we left. About ten minutes later the light went out, so we got up and went to open the door. Just our luck, it's locked. We walk towards the door leading to the office, but it's locked too. The only other exit, unless we want to wait until morning, is the window.
"Let's just climb out the window. We're not that high up" Anna says as she looks down towards the ground.
"Well, today's the day I die" I say as I go and open the window. "Anna, do you want to go first?" I say backing away, pushing her forwards.
"Ya ya I'll go. You better not chicken out" she says as she starts climbing. As she gets out of the window, she reaches for a tree, and jumps towards it.
"Anna!" I scream as she catches onto the tree.
"I'm fine. Calm down" she says laughing at my terrified face. She climbs down the tree, then yells at me to go. Terrified at how the heck I'm supposed to do this, I try to climb out of the window. After five minutes of struggling I finally got out.
"Now jump to the tree! Anna yells.
"How the heck am I supposed to do that?" I ask motioning to the brace on my knee.
"Oh... Right... Since your arms are sort of ok, just reach and try and catch it" Anna says.
"Well, here goes nothing" I say as I reach over. Since I'm taller than Anna, I can reach the tree easily. I hold on so tight my knuckles turn white, and swing to where I put my legs down on a thick branch. Ten minutes later, I finally got out of the tree.
"Ok, now home?" Anna says
"Ya. We'll have to walk" I say as we start to head towards the direction of the house. When we get there, Anna opens the door to her mom and dad, looking worried.
"Where have you been? We've been so worried!" Her mom says as Anna looks at me
"Oh my gosh, Zach, what happened?" She gasps as she sees the bruises on my arms and the brace on my leg.
"It's been a long day" Anna says
