Carly’s P.O.V.

The further we go, the more exhausted I get. Ted and I are trekking up a hill that’s dense with trees, and we are about five miles deep into it. It’s not that far in the long run, though. Running around in this muck is nothing.

The leaves beneath me crunch after each footstep and twigs crack under pressure. Against the stillness of the rest of the forest, we’re being quite loud. I wouldn't be surprised if someone found us.

I look over my shoulder at Ted. He smiles at me, but I can tell it’s forced. Of course he isn't happy—we're in the middle of a zombie apocalypse! Why in the world would he be happy?!

Ted's P.O.V.

She's so beautiful—her long black hair, her emerald green eyes, her pink-tinged lips. Everything about her is perfect. And I love the way she’s handled herself so far in this situation; she’s not like most girls. I mean, I love how she hasn’t freaked out—well, I guess we’re all freaking out, given the current circumstances, but she’s keeping her fear to herself.

Plus, she isn't afraid to kill a zombie if it came down to it. She's one of the bravest girls I know. And I’ll ever know, if we don't get out of this alive.

I'm just so happy that we are together. Well, at least I think we’re “together.” I haven’t actually thought about it until now...

An hour passes and I'm still thinking over that question.

“Ted?” Carly asks. It’s been a quiet trip up the hill so far; this was the first attempt at making conversation.

“Yeah?”

“Are we... are we together?” Her voice cracks slightly—I can tell she’s still upset about her parents leaving.

I grin to myself. It’s like she can read my mind. “I dunno,” I say. “What do you think? Do you want to be?”

She looks back at me and smiles sheepishly. “Well, maybe...”
