"Jill. Jillian! Wake up, you gotta go to work in a minute."
I slowly opened my eyes to my mom opening my windows and then walking out of my now lit room. I sat up and scratched my scalp that was covered with my freshly dyed blonde locks.
I got up and walked to the bathroom only yo be greeted by my step dad. "Hey Jill, how's it going." he greeted me politely. I'm the only one out of the 3 kids that appreciates him, knowing that my dad is nowhere to be found.
"Hey Dad, I'm fine and ready to get back in bed." I said kissing him lightly on the cheek and walking into the bathroom. Mommy remarried when I was 12 and my older siblings hated him for some odd reason. I had no personal issues with him. He is not like those stepdad videos you see on twitter or something. He's very loving and took me in as his own.
I looked in the mirror and laughed at my hair. I tugged on a couple waves from my left over wand curl hair style I wore the day before and pulled it all up into a pineapple hairstyle. I began to brush my teeth and wash my face.
I tend to spend more time on my skin. I am not quite sure why but I do. I love the feeling of fresh skin, you know the breeze after you wash it is the absolute best.
I walked back to my room and threw on a black crop top and black high waist jeans I know I will regret in a couple hours due to Detroit heat.
I heard my phone begin to ring indicating that I had a facetime call coming in. It was my best friend Solána.
"Heyyyy Queen. Curls poppin af huh?" She says referring to my now let down but poofy hair.
"You already know, Sis. You looking like Carrot Top's fine black sister. What's up?" I said propping my phone up against my vanity as I applied my winged eyeliner.
"Ayy thanks girl. I'm coming to get you, I work today and I misseded you. You misseded me bestie?" She said with her strong islander accent slipping out. I laughed.
"Yes, I misseded you bestie."
We work at Sephora together at Twelve Oaks. We both set out for our make up license and we plan to change the game with new hair products and make up products especially for black women. Pretty big dreams huh?
"Alright, boo. Just tell me when you get outside. I said spraying my setting spray only on my eyelids considering that's the only thing I'm concerned about melting off my face. I hate caking my face up just for work, but I have to do a lil something to show I have a little make up on since I am a makeup artist and all.
Once she hung up almost simultaneously she pulled up and walked inside the house. "Hey Ma, hey Pops." she said greeting my parents.
"Hey Sol, how are you sweetie?" I hear my mom saying. I slid on my sandals and grabbed my bag and began walking downstairs.
"Omg my bestfriend looking ready to kill. Lemme check the lids." She said walking up to me an referring to my wing. "Ready to kill a man or two, boo" I said laughing and closing my eyes while she checked me out.
"Yes Baeeeee! Okay lets hurry up, I want to get my kale and pineapple juice." She said pulling me out the door. I quickly waved at my parents and closed the door behind me.
We got into the car and the faint sound of Anderson .Paak played through her speakers.
"Jillian, why do you still live there? You're 23 years old and fresh out of college with a cosmetology degree and you live with your parents. You can move in with me, the offer is still open." Sol says while stopped at a stop light. I shrugged.
She's right, I'm grown as hell, but I'm the baby of the family. I can't help it. I'm not necessarily ready to leave the nest yet. But I will soon, I hope so at least.
