Prologue
Once upon a time, there was a boy. He lived far from the city, on a farm near a small village, but he was happy with his lot, and he enjoyed his life.
Once upon a time, there was a fairy who loved a boy. When the boy came of age and began to look for a wife, the fairy came forward and confessed her love for him.
Once upon a time, the boy refused the fairy, choosing as his bride a beautiful woman who lived in the town nearby.
Once upon a time, the fairy’s father, the king, showed up the day of the wedding—what was supposed to be the happiest day of the boy’s life so far—and decided it was time for revenge.
Once upon a time, the fairy king placed a curse on the boy that he would become a beast and be hunted by the fairy folk until his death. The fairy girl intervened, and pleaded that her father give the boy another chance. He relented, and set a protective spell upon a castle in the woods, telling the boy he could not leave without losing its protective powers. He gave the boy twenty years in which the protective charm would work, and in that time, he must find a girl who would love him as a beast to break the curse. If he could not, he would die in the hunt.
Once upon a time, I was foolish, and scorned a fairy.
And now, for all time, I have to pay the price.
