A knight was summoned late at night
To an anxious king, seeking power
He looked the man over
and without a pause
He requested the gift of beauty
The knight argued and questioned
The king's intentions
But a man like that always gets his way
He was sent off at once
Without a backwards glance
Left alone to do his duty
He searched the mountains,
The land of the dragons,
In search of treasure
Or solid gold flagons
All for the king
What he could have found
In a butterfly wing
He was sent to the sea
To frollick with the nymphs
With high hopes of receiving
The most expensive of gifts
All for the king
What he could have found
In a butterfly wing
When he came back empty-handed
He was immediately turned away
By the king who refused
To meet him halfway
So again he left
And headed for the desert
Where he could search
For beauty beyond measure
All for the king
What he could have found
In a butterfly wing
He tore down a forest
In search of precious gems
Anhilated species
To not to be condemned
All for the king
What he could have found
In a butterfly wing
When he collapsed at the palace gates
Dead from exhaustion
The heartless king tossed him aside
He ignored the suffering
All throughout the land and
Tried to forget why he had died
He thought through his plan
Once or twice
And questioned why it had failed
He'd done everything right
He didn't understand
Then the reason was unveiled
Perhaps he had not realized
The good things that were at hand
Perhaps if he had known
That knight would not have died
For his demand
His life was lost for the king
For what could have been found
In a butterfly wing
