When I started This story has a happy ending. I was angry because cancer stories kept ending so sadly.  I had just read another book where the teen with cancer died and I was so sick of it.  In December 2014 my grandmother lost her battle with cancer so I had the bitter taste of this stupid disease still left in my mouth.

However, there was more to it than a few sad books with sad endings and my grandmother's battle.

As a middle/high school student I lived at baseball fields.  My two younger brothers played and I was their biggest fan.  I only missed a game if I absolutely had to and I became close with many players and parents in the league.  It was a big happy family, for the most part.  Until one of the members of our family was diagnosed with cancer.

I didn't know JC (using initials for privacy purposes) very well but I still thought of him daily after his diagnosis.  I attended benefits and hugged his parents while they wore brave faces.  He was fourteen and things didn't look so good for him.  But he pulled through.

JC was the kid with the happy ending.  He was the one that I had in mind when I started writing this fanfiction because he beat cancer.  Two transplants and more chemo than any kid should go through and he was cancer free.

Little did I know, his cancer came back and the treatments that worked the first time didn't work the second.  In hindsight I remember seeing JC out at a restaurant and he looked bad but I didn't think anything of it.

On August 14, 2015, at just 17, JC lost his battle with cancer and the kid with the happy ending didn't have such a happy ending anymore.

I am so heartbroken over this loss.  As I said, I barely knew JC except to say hello when I saw him around.  However he was a member of my brother's baseball team and every team member was dear to me.

JC is in a better place now and he's no longer suffering.  I didn't know that his cancer had come back but I've gone through old posts on his facebook page and it's clear that things have been very bad for a while now.  I wish he was still here but I'm glad he's not in pain anymore.

Rest in peace, JC.  You didn't get the cancer free happy ending that you deserve but you were a happy, energetic, athletic boy and so many people love you.  This story is dedicated to you and your fight.  You made it years longer than the doctors said you would.

Remember to never give up, kids.  You are strong and you are amazing.

Cancer sucks.  I wish one day we will live in a world where cancer no longer exists and funerals are only for people who have lived a hundred happy years.

xoxo Tia
