Prologue

Wind swept through her long, light brown hair as she walked off the school bus. With her bag hanging from her right shoulder, she stepped on the hard, cement sidewalk. Just as she did so, she realized something dreadful. It was raining.

Luckily, she had remembered to bring her umbrella with her from school. She had remembered looking out the class window, watching the dark grey clouds move closer and closer to the city.

She stopped walking and looked through her bag to find her plastic umbrella which would protect her, and  new green t-shirt from getting soaked. Zipping the bag open, she quickly grabbed it, before the rain fell even faster. The black umbrella opened up to cover and please her.

As she started to zip her bag back up, she saw something shinning in her bag. She looked back at it and realized it was only the reflection of the sun on her ipod screen.

Listening to music won't hurt me. She thought to herself.

She turned on her music-player and started to walk again, holding her umbrella in one hand, and her ipod in the other.

Soon enough she could finally see her house, about 50 or 60 meters away. She sighed.

Maybe I'll finish my homework in time. Doubt it. She thought, thinking of how much things she had to do.

She slowly walked across the road, stopping half way. She stood with her feet together in the middle of the intersection. She looked toward the very end of the road. It reached about 200 meters away, until trees covered the rest of her sight.

Something felt strange. She felt like she was the only one in the world. She felt oddly alone. No one was in sight. No noise except for the rain falling in small puddles and the radio music from her ipod coming on minimum volume. Nothing was moving except for the wind which was moving the trees and bushes.

Then, she felt it. A trembling feeling. Something shook the ground. An earthquake.

She yelped as she fell to the ground. The quake was more than she had ever expected.

She held her head in her hands, protecting it. Her headphones fell out of her ears, the ipod slipped out of her hands, crashing to the ground.

She was on her knees. Since she had shorts on, her legs got scratched and a slight hint of blood came out. She rolled over without knowing, on her back she lay until everything had calmed down.

It had only taken about 30 seconds, but in that time, a lot of destruction could have happened.

They're getting longer. She thought with a creeping feeling of panic crawling over her.

When she had gotten up, she went to see where her ipod was. It was on the gravel road. She picked it  back up. Just like it was normal. Like this would happen everyday, and it just happened to be when she was walking across he road. She shivered.

She put her headphones back on. She was amazed that she could still hear something through them, for they seemed broken and worthless now.

But what she heard would not cheer her up for long.

It was the radio.

"...interrupted by this important message. If you hear this, please tell everyone in sight and in earshot. The government and scientist have finally accepted that now..." The voice crackled and she could her the person resist something.

"...now, all humans who want to live, young to old, please get to your nearest airport. Scientists say the earth could be destroyed in the matter of hours." The voice seemed now to be crying. There was a short pause. The announcer caught their breath again.

"The shuttles are ready. We are ready to leave this earth once and for all. Each airport should have 20 to 40 shuttles. If you arrive early, you could make sure to get on them. I repeat; Scientist say..."

She was there. In the middle of the road. Holding her breath. It had happened. The worlds most dreaded moment that anyone could have thought of. The end.

"Oh, no..." She said. Maybe her last words on this earth.
