A new scam targeting fans of the popular puzzle game Sudoku is spreading through the internet.
According to the AARP, the trade group for folks aged 50 and older, the scam works like this: an email arrives in your mail box, promising free unlimited Sudoku puzzles at the click of a keyword. Unfortunately when you click on it, malware is installed onto your computer that attempts to steal your identity.
The plot was uncovered this year by online security firm Sophos. Unsuspecting computer users who fall for the ploy disable their security software and install a malware that gathers sensitive information from the computer and sends it to a fraudster at a remote site online.
It is an old online scam using a new trick by targeting players of the popular game. Consumers need to delete the Sudoku email and report it to the Federal Trade Commission.
To protect yourself from online scam artists, follow these tips:
· Remember the adage “It is better to be safe than sorry” when it comes to being online. Use caution. Don’t respond to emails from people you don’t know.
· Don’t share your personal information with anyone online.
· Investigate. If you get an email from someone unfamiliar, check them out by doing research online to ensure it is legitimate.
