Why?

"Raven....here have a seat." Regina motioned to the couch in the living room and watched as Raven slowly made her way over and sat down tenderly perched on the edge. Regina then made her way over and took a bold step and sat right next to Raven. The young girl at once felt slightly uncomfortable being so close to Regina but relaxed very quickly after remembering this was not the evil queen, but Regina, her mother.

Regina took a deep breath and looked down at her lap. "I will tell you the truth, because that's what you deserve. What you know......is a messed up version of events created by my mother."

"But why would grandma lie to m.."

"Because she is not a nice person Raven and I'm sorry you had to spend 16 years with her. It was 16 too many!"

Raven was taken slightly a back at the sudden outburst so sat back gingerly and allowed Regina to continue. "Back....back before I was the 'Evil Queen ' I was in love with a man called Daniel."
"The stable boy that Grandma killed?" Regina stared at her child and then nodded.

"I thought I would never love again but Tinkerbell took me too a tavern where I saw the man with the lion tattoo."
"Robin"

"Yes but at the time i didn't know, I didn't even go in too ask his name. All I knew about my apparent soul mate was that he had a lion tattoo. I gave in to my darker side after that and became the Evil Queen, I mean geeze I was a bitch."
Raven giggled slightly but then resumed looking deeply interested.

"One day my mother decided she wanted to help me find love and went out in search for Robin... well the mysterious man with the tattoo. Little did I know that she had found out who he was but didn't approve so found another man instead. She brought this man back to me disguised with a tattoo and I was over the moon. I thought for once my mother had actually done something for me not herself!"

Regina took a deep breath

"I knew what love felt like.....I had had that with Daniel but this. This felt different and I just assumed that this is what soul mates felt like, so I ignored the strange feeling that I had. He and I grew close. Your......your father....the..."
"Sheriff of Nottingham"

"Yeah...............he and I we got on. We were friends actually and it felt like he really cared for me, and soon we were engaged and I was well pregnant with you. As you can imagine Cora was angry that you were conceived out of wedlock but over the moon that I was pregnant with an heir to the throne. A continuation of the Mills family line. We didn't tell the kingdom I was pregnant because I wanted to keep it low key until i was evidently showing."

"and then what?"

"I was two months along when I was lying in bed with your father. He was asleep but he was talking. I...heard him whisper, "I don't love her Cora, give me what I am owed and let me go." I didn't know what to do or say. I was young and he was dreaming........so when we woke up the next day I asked him about it. He was silent. It was then I became angry and demanded to know. I grabbed his arm and placed a spell on his tattoo. The spell rebounded and a lion clawed its way out of his skin and the tattoo disappeared. In a moment of panic that I would hurt him with the fiery lion he confessed. He said that Cora had intended to bring me my true soul mate but when she found out it was the thief Robin Hood she decided that he would make a better suitor for the Queen. She said she would give him ultimate riches if he got me pregnant so that she could have a stronger claim to the royal line of the Enchanted Forest."

Tears were slowly falling down Regina's cheeks as she tried to finish.

"I......I was so angry! I thought for once my mother had tried to do right by me but it was all for her!"
