Rose's PoV

I was having the best time at Wendy's house! It was a chilly October day but there was just enough sun to keep us from freezing. James was about to take us hiking when...

"Wendy!!!" Megan screamed at the top of her lungs to get our attention. Oh gosh....what did she want now?! She was always trying to stop Wendy and me from hanging out and when we did, she would pout or throw a fit!

"What do you want Megan?!" It looked as if Wendy wanted her to leave just as much as me.

"Whatcha doing?" She looked irritated. I rolled my eyes at this.

This was how it always started. She would come up to us and try to join us in whatever we were doing and then she would find something to complain about. If we didn't do exactly what she wanted after that, she would go in and say we wouldn't play with her. She was such a bratty child.

"We were about to go hiking. Do you wanna come along?" James asked her. Well now he's done it.... I wish he knew what was about to happen.

Megan smiles a fake smile, "All of you? I thought Rose was going home soon." Great. Now she would want to spend the night with us.

"Well, I decided to stay again tonight since I never really see Wendy that much..." Somehow I managed to squeak the answer to her question. Why am I so shy? I've known them for three years know...I should be able to talk around them!!!

She acted as if she didn't hear me and turned her head back to James. "Sure, sounds fun!" she then asked us to wait for her so she could change.

Well at least I was still spending time with James and Wendy.

~~~~~~~~~~~time skip~~~~~~~~~~~~
After waiting in silence for about five minutes, she finally returned. We went to the edge of the forest we were about to enter and jumped over the creek. The incline of the hill was almost straight up. It was covered with leaves, small plants, mud, and a few trees here and there. Good thing I didn't wear my new clothes.
~~~~~~~~another time skip~~~~~~~~

After about 10 minutes of scaling the tiny mountain, Megan stopped us.

"I have to go to the bathroom!" She had stopped us 5ft from the top. We all paused and turned to look at her.

"Well why didn't you go before we left?" James voice was filled with annoyance.

She shot her answer with a level of sass that made me want to slit her throat while she slept, "I didn't have to go then!!!"

The three of us all sighed with exasperation, knowing we would have to give in once again.

"Let's go ba-"

"I'll take her James" All heads shot to Wendy.

For a moment, I was happy that we didn't have to sacrifice our fun for Megan again, it was then that I realized what would happen if Wendy took her.....I would be left....alone.....with James.....NOOO!!!! I would never survive the awkwardness that is my personality! I had to stop her!!!

"N-no... It's fine...I can take her for you. Go ahead and keep on hiking..." in my head I was begging her to take the bait and let me leave instead.

"It's ok. I have to use bathroom too. You and James go on up and we'll meet you at the top in about 5 minutes!" To show that her word was final, Wendy turned away and started back down the hill with Megan trailing behind her. I watched her walk away, and all I could do was stand frozen in shock.

I turned around to find James already moving again, now only a few more feet from the top. Hastily, I scampered to where he was, tripping repeatedly as I went.

~~~~~~at the top of the hill~~~~~~
When I finally arrived at the top, James was waiting for me on the opposite side of a barbed wire fence. Instead of refusing to go, my head tilted, eyes squinting, questioning his actions. My only response was him holding his hands out to help me over.
A small bout of fear at the though of him realizing how heavy I was, hit me head on. Shaking my head, I looked around until my eyes spotted the perfect thing to get me to the other side. A stump!!! I could stand on that and easily climb over the fence. I stood on the stump, swung a leg over, but before I could get my other leg over, I slipped and started to fall.
Squeezing my eyes shut and letting out a small yelp, I waited for my face to hit the dry, rocky dirt.
The impact never came. Slowly opening my eyes, I saw my face inches from the ground, two shoes right beside me.
"Are you alright?" James asked, his voice laced with amusement. He pulled me up and set me straight with a smirk dancing across his face. My face grew hot as my eyes shot to the ground.
"Th-thanks for catching me...." I inwardly cursed myself for my clumsiness. Why did I always have to embarrass myself in front of him?! Gosh he must think I'm so stupid!
"You're welcome. You know, you're really light. You need to eat more". He said the last bit with a touch of seriousness. We had lunch an hour ago, though I wasn't very hungry so I didn't really eat. Has he ever really seen me eat? I mean I was over a lot over during the summer, but did I ever really eat when he was around?
Wait...he noticed I didn't eat? But I thought he was doing work for college....? Was he paying attention to me? Does that mean he likes me? No. You're just blowing this WAY out of proportion and being absolutely ridiculous.
Oh great....I'm rambling now....I need to stop before he notices somethings up.
"I know I'm heavy, you don't have to be nice," I tried to laugh it off and end the conversation there, but....
"I mean it, Rose, you never really eat when you're here, or talk much for that matter. You don't need to be shy around us." His words hit me like a ton of bricks...he really did pay attention...Maybe he actually does care!!!! No! Stop putting more into this than there is!
I shrugged, trying to act cool and pretend his words didn't effect me. I started to sit down on a small patch of grass, when I noticed him walking the other way. Not really wanting to be left alone, I followed him in silence.
We walked together in an awkward silence, with me only a few steps behind him. There was room for me to stand next to him, but being the strangle little failure I am, I probably would step in a hole or something and embarrass myself more than I already had today. Therefore I concluded that walking behind him would be much better for me.
All of a sudden, I had the eerie feeling that we were being watched, but I brushed it off, thinking I was just being paranoid. A twig snapped from behind me, but before I could whirl around to see what made the noise, I felt a cold, smooth piece of metal press roughly against the side of my head, making me gasp in shock.
James turned around, looking as if he though I might have seen a snake or tripped again. He began to ask what happened until he saw me being held by a man with a gun pressed against my head. His eyes buldged and his mouth hung open slightly as his eyes met mine.
I could feel the fear radiating off of him as he attempted calculate what his next move should be and whether or not we would both make it. From the man, light traces of alcohol could be found, the sweet, crisp smell of fall now ruined by the stench he carried.
A deep raspy voice spoke, his southern accent heavy, "Well what do we have here? Trespassing on my land are we? That could get you in a world of trouble you know..." the man spoke, a smirk evident in his voice, "A whole world of trouble."
