In class we discussed the touched on the significance of flight in the song of Solomon. Namely focusing on on possible inspiration for it. We concluded that it was connected to the old stories about flying Africans, and the myth of Deadalus and Icarus. We connected an image of Icarus' wings failing and tied it to the novel. Ranging from the strong healthier of the two being Milkman at the end, to Solomon, to Pilate, and the failing one to Milkman at the beginning, Guitar, and Jake. I thought the best comparison of the two would be that they could both be representative of Milkman. One being him at the beginning of the text. Representing what would have occurred had he tried to fly at an earlier part of the text. Showcasing that he wasn't fully himself yet, and was in fact unprepared for true, ultimate freedom. While the other was strong and sure of himself as Milkman was when he leapt from Solomon's leap towards Guitar. Showing that he was the best him possible, having finally achieved the freedom that is flight, no matter what truly happened he still achieved that state of self-assurance.
