Five days.
Five days I didn't realize we were living right next to each other. Five days I didn't know that if I looked right out my window I'd see his. Five days I didn't realize we're neighbors.
I run downstairs screaming (and by screaming I mean whining. I don't scream).
"What now?" Emily asks, taking another sip from her tea.
"We're living right next to the Peters'!" I complain loudly.
"Is that who they are? Why is this a problem?"
"Because! I know they're son from school!"
"Are you friends? Or is he a bully? Or does he have a sex dungeon?"
"Emily!"
She laughs.
"Ugh! Neither! I think.."
"So he could have a sex dungeon?"
"I doubt it." I roll my eyes. "Every girl in school loves this guy. But he's such a... a... I don't know! He's just annoying!"
"Yeah, he definitely has a sex dungeon."
"Emily! Enough with the sex dungeon! Too much Law And Order SVU for you."
She laughs.
"Now way. They're marathoning it." She says. "And drink your tea before it's cold."
"Oh, yeah." I say and sit down on the island chair to drink it.
Around 3am I wake up to the door flinging open downstairs. I immediately know it's my Aunt Linda finally coming home. After her work ends for the weekend she usually goes to drink. She's not taking my mom's death well, I don't think. Even though I'm pretty sure they hated each other. I'm also quite certain she hates having us around, specifically me. I pass my heavy-sleeping-sister and open the door to go downstairs. My aunt always leaves the door unlocked when she comes home drunk.
I go downstairs to find my aunt laying on the couch with even more alcohol from the kitchen. I go to lock the door when I realize she didn't just not lock it back, she left it wide open. I glare at her.
Did she drive herself home? I wonder, seeing her car parked outside.I should be grateful she's letting us live here. I should be grateful we're not in Foster care (which we could be considering my aunt is all the family we have left). But I hardly am. It's not safe here. Not for my little sister, and not for me.
The only family we have left is crazy.I lock the door back and turn to go back upstairs.
"I saw you glaring at me, Katelyn. That's no way to treat me. Not after all I've done for you."
"Whatever" I murmur.
"Don't talk back to me, Katelyn! I can have you and your sister thrown on the streets!"
She continues to yell, and I continue to walk upstairs, ignoring her. I swear, she's too drunk to even realize what's happening.
I wake up at 11pm and see that Emily's already out of bed. I walk downstairs and smell breakfast cooking.
"What's for breakfast?" I ask Emily.
"Waffles." She replies.
I then see the waffle maker filled with batter on every weird waffley square.
