Chapter Four

It felt rather downing to be able to walk past somebody on the sidewalk and not even have them look up at you, or say hello. Not one person met my gaze, only walking by like I didn't exist.

Not like they could help it-- it was kind of hard to see a ghost, let alone say "Hi" to one.

One after another, a man, woman, girl or boy would brush past me, staring at their shoes as they shuffled along the sidewalk. I had lost all hope in one of them noticing me; it seemed impossible now.

Until I smacked into someone-- or something-- hard, losing my balance and falling to the ground.

"Ow!" A girl yelped, dropping her school bag. She looked down at me before picking up her bag, dusting the dirt off of the courderoy surface. "Watch where you're going, will ya?" She frowned, walking away. I blinked.

Did that really just happen?

"Wait!" I cried, jumping up off the pavement, jogging after her. She looked over her shoulder, looking slightly weirded out that I was following her. "Wait! I'm sorry-- I should have seen where I was going." I apologised quickly, hoping to keep her attention. She was the first person I've met as a ghost to notice me.

The girl lifted a perfect blonde brow. "It's alright," She finally said, examining my attire. After looking me over she continued. "What's you're name?"

"Um, Nick--" I said, hesitating. "Nick Young. And you?"

"Ava Williams." Ava grinned, holding out a hand. For the shortest second I contemplated whether or not my hand would just go through hers, but after what just happened I decided it probably wouldn't...

Ava was probably wondering why I wouldn't let go of her hand after shaking it a few times. She glanced around nervously and yanked her hand out of my fist, letting it fall by her side. I couldn't stop staring at her-- she could see me! Was she phsycic or something?

She awkwardly shifted her weight to her other foot. "You're cold." She muttered quietly.

The corners of my mouth twitched. "I get that a lot."

Ava looked at cars passing in the street, avoiding my gaze. "I should probably get going," She finally said, looking shyly in to my eyes. I felt my excited expression fall.

"Oh... Alright." I sighed, looking down at my feet. When she didn't leave I looked back up. "Do you have a cell phone?"

Her eyebrows furrowed, probably contemplating whether or not she should give it to me. "Yeah, I have a phone. It's 507-965-4876." She finally said.

I smiled. "Thanks. See you later."

Ava nodded before shrugging her one shoulder to keep her bag from falling off, and walking down the sidewalk again, her blonde hair blowing gently in the autumn breeze. Clouds of steam floated behind her from her breath; I hadn't noticed how cold it had gotten.

You're cold, she had said. I chuckled darkly to myself. Yes, the undead teenage boy without a soul is most likely going to be cold.
