*******************************************************************************

So there I was sitting under a pawpaw tree in my grandpa's farm. I was there for the holidays and I was bored already. I mean who wouldn't? This part of Ghana had no electricity so all my technologies were useless.

I had been being against coming to the village, I have never been here before I argued but my mum wouldn't listen. She said it was going to be alright. I was going to enjoy it. Well I have been here five days already and I hated it. Well okay hate it a strong word cos it was not all that bad but still meh, I would give anything to go back home and sit behind my laptop and read stories on Wattpad any day.

It was Friday afternoon and the sun was making it unbearable to stay indoors so I just went along with my cousins to the farm. I wasn't going to help with the farming, I was just going there to sit under some shade and read.

Since I have never been to the village, I was not really close to my cousins and I felt like they were afraid to come too close. The first two days I arrived I heard one of them say in our native language to another that "See they brought the foreigner. Im sure she cant speak one bit of out tongue."

Of I knew how, I just didn't tell them I could. I peeked at them working on the plant from under my eyelashes and sighed. They wouldn't invite me to try farming anyway. Might as well read. I was lucky I had packed all of my novels and brought them with me.

I flipped a page and giggled at a snarky comment on the characters in my book said. I was there for a while when a shadow fell upon me and my book. I looked up to see one of my cousins, a girl, slightly older than I standing in front of me. I marked where I was in the book so I don't lose it and waited for her to speak.

"We go house come" she said to me in broken English. I know she was trying to make me understand. 'Miriam let her know you can speak the language and make her feel free' I thought to myself. I opened my mouth to but then I stopped myself. I wouldn't do that, she was the one that spoke about me behind my back.

"We go...uh...take food for house. You go chop?" she asked me gesturing to her mouth. I understood her well but I still didn't make a sound. She stood for a while really uncomfortable till I nodded and she sighed in relief. I am sure she was thinking 'at least she understood' as she left with the other two to bring food from the house.

The farm was not too far from the house so I didn't really mind. I just leaned back against the tree and returned to my reading. It wasn't long till I felt that I was being watched. I raised my head and looked around. That was when I saw him, he was standing a little far off from our farm. Probably taking care of his own. The village people had farms close to each other so they could help out when they needed help.

He was really cute and light skinned. I couldn't really see his eyes from that far but I bet they were beautiful. He saw that he had been caught staring and smiled at me. The smile took my breath away. I couldn't help but smile back. 'What was this?' I asked myself. I tucked my hair behind my ear and swore that if I wasn't black I would be blushing redder than the fully ripe tomatoes on granny's farm. I looked away and tried to read but I couldn't. I tried but when I read the same line five times I knew I had to give up.

I stole a glance to see if he was still staring and found out that he was. I rolled my eyes and knew I had to talk to him. I stood and dusted the back of the jeans short I was wearing and walked towards him. His eyes widened when he realized what I was doing and started to hoe very fast. I laughed as I neared him and said "You know its rude to stare at a lady" before it hit me. Maybe he wasn't an English speaker like me. Maybe he was like my cousins?
