I've kept my promise to Amelia and kept quiet about her strange ability, and she's kept quiet about me. I've been... eliminating, "those who oppose the purple team," whatever that means. I don't really think much about it, because I feel like if I did I wouldn't be able to handle it.
Today I'm getting a new target, most likely because the last one died, and it wasn't my fault for once.
"Alright, Piper, here's your target. Name's Eris Harre," explains the "Head Purple," as Amelia calls her. I nod casually, as if this is just some random person like all the others, but it isn't. I haven't heard her last name in six years, but I know it's the same person. I have no idea what to do, she's my friend! They wouldn't ask me to get rid of Amelia if she wasn't part of their team, would they? ...They probably would. I think I'll at least go out and find Eris first, and see if she's still the same as I remember her....
I carefully leap out of my hiding place between two buildings, paint can in hand. I fly along, splattering the paint all over the Green propaganda.
"Hey, Harre! What's with the blue! People will think you're allied with the Blue team, which is the exact opposite of what we're going for!" cries a voice from down below.
"Sorry, boss, but this is a royal blue, not dodger blue! It makes us seem like we're against the Green team only, making this seem like it was done by someone else, and the slight colour difference between here and in the Blue team signals, 'no, we aren't allied with the Blue team.' Do you see my reasoning now?" I call back.
"Dodger blue? What is that?"
"Ughhhhh, fine. Bright neon blue. Is that good enough?"
My boss huffs, then replies, "Yeah, yeah, whatever. Just finish before dawn, okay? We've been losing members fast recently, and I don't mean they've been resigning."
"Got it!" I answer shakily.
...
I watch Eris finish painting over a poster made by Green, and then I decide to kick her out of the air. Bad idea, I know.
"Hey, what's the big ide--Piper?" She asked incredulously. I hastily get up, and offer her a hand.
"Sorry," I respond, "Rash decisions seem to be my go-to thing nowadays. Anyway, care to explain what you were doing just now?"
At this point, her entire face lights up with joy. "Oh! I was just hiding some Team propaganda with paint."
I roll my eyes, and reply, "Yeah, I saw. But why? Because I kind of got hired to kill you so I need to figure out if you're a big enough jerk for me to be able to go through with it." This is the point where I get clocked in the jaw. I definitely deserve it.
"Are you kidding me, Piper?!" she hollers, "I finally see you after five-plus years, and it's because you're going to kill me! Perfect!" Eris is pacing by now, making wide hand gestures.
I start to get up, explaining, "Well, technically, I'm figuring out if you're a huge jerk or not so I can have a reason to risk my life escaping Purple. Plus, you haven't actually explained yet."
Eris continues to pace, not even paying attention to the fact that I'm standing up and scanning the horizon for anybody else. "Oh no oh no oh no you're here as part of the Purple team? I knew we shouldn't have painted over that one mural of theirs oh noooooooo," she rants, pulling at her hair.
I walk over to her and put my hands on her shoulders to stop her. "Seriously, Eris! Just explain, and I'm almost certainly not going to kill you, okay?" I explain, my patience wearing thin.
She exhales a few times, then says, "Okay, fine. But you have to promise not to say anything about this, got it?" I nod, then she continues, "Okay, good. So, we're a rebellion against the Teams, because to be honest all of them are bad."
I'm a bit shocked at first, but then realize what she means. "Got it. Now, let's go get Amelia from Purple!" I exclaim.
"Wait, she's in the Purple team, too? Oh, great." Eris groans.
I smirk, and reply, "Don't worry, I can go in and get her easy-peasy."
