As soon as we arrive, my mom hands me a twenty. Looking down, then back at her, I shake my head. "It's too much, you really don't have to." I say,

"No Honey, take it. I'll pick you up at nine, make sure to eat something there okay?" Nodding, I stuff the bill in my back pocket, and in both hands, I hold my skates. I always hated the rental ones, they were always sticky, or smelly, or worn out. I only wore one pair of rentals, and after that, I went to the store the next day to buy my own.

As I walk into the doors, I realize I don't have to pay because it's girl's skate free on Thursdays and Saturdays. Looking around, the music hasn't yet started, and here isn't many people here. Probably early I suppose. Making my way around the back, I sit on the chairs holding my skates, and watching for Amanda.

"Hey Laur!" Swinging my head to the side, I see her coming out of the bathroom. "Glad you could make it, other wise I would be stuck with total strangers."

"No you wouldn't, the whole school basically comes here."

"What ever, you don't see the 'best friends' alone right?" I smile at her use of nickname. Every year the school would cast out names like 'best singer' 'most likely to succeed' and 'cutest couple'. Every year since sophomore year, we were named the title, 'best friends'. I guess she has a point, someone may go on starting a rumor of how we don't hang out anymore. As she sits in the chair beside me, I notice her skates in her hands too. "It's too early for these." She says, noticing me looking at them, "Why don't we wait for some people to show up."

"Yeah," I nod in agreement. Even though it is a weekday, BJ's gets busy ever day of the week. I guess they are a famous place. We sit and watch clumps of people pile in, us pointing out those from school. She notices her old boyfriend Marcus, and gives a gagging sound. Smiling, we apply our skates, and try to stand up. Amanda is a great skater. She was on the skating team since she was five, on the other hand, I am the total opposite. Come to think of it, our friendship is totally opposite. I have blonde hair, she has brown. I love food, she is okay with it. I am more of a shy person when it comes to new people, she is like an atomic bomb. I get pretty good grades, she is horrible at them. I hate sports, she loves them. I have green eyes, she has brown. I love polka dots, she likes stripes. I am a virgin, she isn't. (Long story) I have sort-of protective parents, her parents are of the top when it comes to things like that. I like dogs, she loves cats.

Whatever she likes, I hate. But I guess that is what makes us best friends. because even though we are so different, there is one thing the same. We click with the opposite.

"Come on, lets go skate!" She says, pointing to the speakers as they start to play music. Without my consent, she yanks my arm, and pulls me onto the rink. Already filled with enough people, I grip onto her neck, trying not to touch anyone. As she pulls me along, rather quickly, I am frozen in my place, I look up ahead to see the turn.

"Slow down Amanda." I say, " You aren't slowing down..." I grip her even tighter this time, as she starts to turn. By the time I open my eyes again, we are going straight. I think our track is weird, it is in the shape of a square, and in the middle, bars surrounding the dance floor. There is a disco, and fancy lights. The track is dark, and cool. Sometimes, they even turn all of the lights off besides the ones in the middle. Usually around eight. "Can we get off?" I ask, motioning for the exit. Smiling, she turns to the side, as I can finally let go.

"Just loosen up. If you don't want to go fast, tell me."

"I just haven't skated in a while, that's all. Do you want to walk around- er- skate around? I don't really want to take these off." Nodding, she skates with me on the carpet, as we make our way to the other side of the building.  "How much money do you have?" I ask,
