Sarah and I passed the ball back and forth, watching the spin on the ball and fascinated by it. She reached over, without taking her eyes off the ball, to get a couple cheese balls, and placed them in her mouth.
I could hear the crunching noise, and it disgusted me. Then I grabbed the ball, and went to her phone and turned on Spotify. Different artists and good songs were played on shuffle, until Kasey, our supervisor came into our room and shut it off.
"What did I tell you girls before? No music after 9 pm!" Her voice was stern and her face was scrunched up. I quickly ran over to Sarah's phone and turned it off. "Now, you two, bed. Now!"
"Yes Ms. Kasey." We say in sync. Kasey closes the door, turning the light off as she does. I get on the top bunk and Sarah gets on the bottom.
I lay flat on my back for a while, then a question hits me. "Hey, Sarah?"
"Yeah Em?"
"Do you think, you know..."
"Someone will adopt you? Em I've been asking myself that for the past 5 years. It still hasn't happened yet. But knowing you, you'll probably end up with a person who helps other people. Not just a family who wants a child."
Sarah is pure honesty. A lot of times, like this one, you don't want to hear what she says, but she has no filter in her mind. Word after word are the truth.
I don't say anything after that, and I wait, just like every night, to hear snoring from Sarah to make sure she's asleep, and let tears fall.
It's nothing new to me. And I'm pretty sure if Sarah didn't snore every night, she would be used to it too.
I go out into the hallway, and make sure no one else is awake. Then I go to the bathroom and clean my face. My eyes are unfixable though. They're always so red and puffy when I'm done.
When I'm finished, I walk out of the bathroom and hear knocking on the front door. As curious as I am, I go straight to the door. Kasey says never go to the door if you hear knocking after hours, but I never listen to them.
When I get to the door, I peek through the peep hole and see a young lady with short black hair and beautiful dark brown eyes.
I unlock the door, then open it. "Hi. I'm so sorry for coming so late but I'm only here for one more day, and tomorrow is all meetings."
"Um that's alright. Come in." She walks through the door and I close it behind her. "What's your name?" I quietly ask.
"Oh I'm sorry I should've said that before. I'm Demi. What's yours?"
"I'm Emma. Um look I shouldn't even be talking to you this late because of Kasey's rules and if she finds out she's gonna-"
"Emma Grace Johnson! What on earth do you think you're doing?!" She comes stomping through the living room, and straight in my face.
"I'm sorry Ms. Kasey, I was just curious."
"Well your curiosity could've gotten yourself kidnapped tonight!! Go back to your room and don't you dare come out until I say so!"
"Yes Ms. Kasey." I hunch my head over and walk back to my room. Even though our door was closed I could hear their every word.
"I'm sorry Ms. Kasey. I didn't mean for her to get in trouble, I don't have any time tomorrow to come back."
"Well we're very sorry we would love for you to adopt but it's too late right now and it doesn't matter how much-" Theres silence for a while. Then Ms. Kasey breathes heavily.
