"Bye, Dan! See you next week!" PJ shouted down the street at Dan as he walked down the sidewalk.

Dan turned around a little and waved. PJ smiled, and went back into the shop. Dan started walking towards his bus stop, and took the bus to his street.

When he arrived at his stop, it was raining. "Naturally." Dan muttered to himself. No, he wasn't a very positive person, but hey, he had a decent job and house.

He was about to unlock his door, when he heard a little "Mew." He was a little puzzled-yes, there was an alley next door, but there was almost never a cat, usually dogs- and he decided to investigate.

Dan walked into the little alley space, barely big enough for a human. He saw the German Shepard that was chained up to the wall outside what was probably a drug dealer's back door.

Anyways, he walked along slowly, listening quietly for another meow. He heard one coming from a little box, and he saw that there was an obviously dying mother cat in the box, with a little black and white kitten mewling at her.

Dan's heart broke in that instant, and he picked up the little kitten. The mother didn't even bite him, she just licked the little kitten one more time and laid her head down.

Back to that whole "heart-breaking" thing.

The little kitten weakly mewled against him, and Dan hailed a taxi. He went to the vet, and took the kitten in.

The vet came back out with the kitten, and said, "Are you planning on keeping him?"

Dan thought for a moment, and said, "Yep."

The vet smiled, and said, "Well, you're going to have to do some paperwork, but he's all yours."

Dan walked over to the paperwork area, and signed. He decided to name the cat Phil, he didn't know why, but the cat-now Phil- just looked like a Phil.

He picked up Phil, and bought some food from the veterinarian. Phil kept snuggling into him, and Dan's heart felt all fuzzy right now.

There was something different about Phil, he knew that much.
