"She was the only light the darkness couldn't hide."
"Mom?" I yawned adjusting my eyes to the darkness filling the living room.
I was awoken by the clattering sound I heard earlier, I think it was coming from the kitchen. At first, it didn't bother me thinking that it might just be Chasy, our cat, who is just messing around the house. But then I heard a door shut, a loud bang, that is undeniably caused by great force and definitely, it is not made by the wind.
I waited for five minutes before I had my feet in this very ground, just inches away from my mom's room. The wind blew making me shiver. It was 2:59 am, stated the watch.
I knocked on my mom's door. There was no answer. Unusual, I thought. I continued knocking otherwise. Still no answer from her. I twisted the door knob. Unlike before, it was locked.
I don't know what came in to me but I had a bad feeling about this; my mom never locked her room, and she always did answer my knocks on the very first sound. But this time it's different.
Like on cue, the key to her room fell from the key holder, situated on the topmost right angle of her door. My hands were shaking as I picked it up; thrusting it into the keyhole. I'm nervous. I took a deep breath before I twisting the key.
"Mom?" I called out again to her as I took small steps towards the queen size bed. I was about to hop in it when I felt something wet in my feet.
The moonlight from the window gave enough lighting for me to see blood splattered everywhere on the floor, my eyes widen in horror.
"Mom!" I scooted myself hurriedly next to her, tears running down my cheeks. "Noooo!" I cried out loud, wrapping her in my arms. "Mom, please!" I shouted, sobs leaving my lips.
No, I thought. Not my mom, I pleaded. Not the very last family member that I have, I cried.
