"She's weak," the cold voice said. "I just hit her once with my Agiel and she been out for hours!"

"She's just a child, Cara," a softer female voice, replied.

"I was her age when I was taken and I didn't faint after my first encounter with an Agiel," Cara retorted.

"Not everyone is like you, Cara," a male voice said. "Besides, Zedd says she was covered in bruises and she was probably in a lot of pain before you struck her with your Agiel. Maybe it was just too much for her. Why did you attack her Cara?"

"I was protecting you!" Cara snapped.

"From a little girl?" the softer voice asked. "You had no right to attack an unarmed child."

"Unarmed?" Cara hissed. "She has magic; that gives me every right to attack her! I am Lord Rahl's shield against magic."

"How can you be sure that she has magic?" the softer voice asked. "You don't even know if she meant to hurt us!"

"She appeared out of nowhere. Normal people can't do that," Cara said. "For all we know she's one of Shota's minions, sent to-,"

Cara fell silent at the sound of Akeela's moaning.

"Urgh," Akeela groaned as she struggled to open her eyes.

"Zedd!" a black-haired woman, the owner of the soft female voice called, "she's awake."

"About time," Cara muttered.

"Pain," Akeela groaned.

I shouldn't have been able to feel the pain. Isn't this a dream?

The black-haired woman crouched next to Akeela and smiled.
"Hey there. I'm Kahlan, what's your name?"

Akeela frowned and looked into the woman's green eyes. The Mother Confessor.

"I'm Akeela," Akeela muttered. "Why am I not awake?"

Kahlan looked confused. "Awake?"

"Yes," Akeela replied. "This is a dream isn't it? When I was struck with the Agiel, I was supposed to wake up. Instead I felt pain and I'm still here."

Kahlan glanced to the old man who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

Zeddicus Zul Zorrander, a small voice said at the back of Akeela's mind. Wizard of the First Order.

"She's probably disoriented," the man with the sword replied. "Pain caused by the Agiel is capable of scrambling one's thoughts."

The Seeker of Truth, Akeela thought, when she spotted the man's sword.

"Oh please," Cara scoffed, rolling her eyes. "I barely even grazed her!"

Kahlan ignored Cara and spoke gently to Akeela. "This isn't a dream, Akeela. I know you're a bit confused right now, but all of us are real. You're not dreaming Akeela, trust me on that."

"You're sure? It's not a dream?" Akeela asked uncertainly.

"I could use my Agiel on you again," Cara suggested, "if you still have any doubts."

Akeela flinched back.

"Cara!" Kahlan admonished. "I'm really sorry about that," Kahlan said to Akeela.

Akeela nodded and clutched her shoulder. "The pain... it's gone?"

"I healed you, child," the great wizard said. "No need to thank me; I love helping children who have been savaged by Cara."
