The next morning Helga wakes up in bed all alone. She felt a pang of disappointment, but pushes that feeling away and gets up and goes to her room. After showering, getting dressed, and Gertie helping her wounds, she goes downstairs to see Arnold cooking breakfast. He's in his own world, whistling and flipping pancakes. He has nothing on but a pair of sweatpants and no shirt. This makes Helga blush and cough. Arnold turns his head to see her."Oh hey, you're awake! How long have you been standing there?"he asks."O-oh just a little bit."Helga stutters a reply. Arnold eyes her. Her face was blushing, she looked nervous, and she was wearing some jeans and a long sleeved pink sweater. Arnold steps away from the stove and really close to Helga. "You know,"he whispers."You don't have to be afraid of him. You have me and I'll always take care of you. To take your minds off things, we can do something later."he suggests, evil grin and dangerously close. Helga looks up into his eyes, her face still blushing. She saw another side of Arnold. A romantic, teasing side. A small, stuttered "Okay."was all she could manage. Arnold grins and steps back to the stove. Helga takes a seat as all the borders arrive, her mind never leaving the thought of Arnold.
After breakfast, Arnold showers and gets dressed. He tell Helga to get her coat and shouts to his grandmother that he was going out."Okay Kimba! Just don't make me a great grandmother yet!"she shouts back, howling with laughter. Arnold's face goes deep red."Grandma!"he says. More howling laughter. Helga giggles a bit and tugs at his hand."Let's go..."she whispers lightly. He nods and both blondes walk out the front door.
The sky is grey as they walk down the snow-covered blocks."So..where are we going?" Helga finally asks."You'll see."Arnold replies, vague. Helga looks at him. He's so amazing. He's so kindhearted, generous, mysterious, and versatile. How he did it, Helga may never know. They walk a little longer until they reach two old abandoned boarding houses."What is this?"Helga asks. Arnold puts a finger to his lips, indicating her to be quiet. Helga complies and follows Arnold and she sees him putting two garbage cans together. Then he climbs on top of them, and climbs the fence, motioning Helga to do the same. 'What?! I am not doing that!'she thinks to herself as she climbs the fence. She accidentally slips in the other side and falls on her butt. She grumbles angrily. Arno,d holds a hand out and picks her up."You okay?"he asks."Yea, but I don't see why we had to be so quiet."she replies."Oh, I just wanted you to stop asking questions."Arnold confesses and laughs. Helga blushes, puts her hand in his face, and walks off."Whatever Football head."she says and turns around. Then she stops. The sight she sees is beautiful. It's a soft, untouched field of snow, whiter than paper. The trees have beautiful patterns of icicles hanging from its snow-covered branches, and a medium sized pond is frozen over, enough for a couple people to ice-skate over. "Wow, Arnold..."she mumbles. He walks up next to her and wraps his arm around her waist."Beautiful isn't it?"he asks, smirk on his face. Helga looks up to his face turned to the scenery with shining eyes."Yea, it is.."she says, not referring to the field. "Well how about we ice skate?"he asks."Ice skate?!"Helga thinks aloud."I don't have any skates."she points out."Not behind that tree does it say so."He says, pointing to a tree to his right. She gasps."Really?!"she exclaims. Arnold grins at her. She runs out of his grasp to behind the tree. She sees a perfect gift box wrapped in purple and a pair of older blue skates leaned against the tree. She tears it open quickly and opens it to see pink ice-skates. Arnold walks up behind up. She brings herself up from her kneeling position and throws herself into him."Thank you so much!"she says into his chest. He strokes her hair."Ot was no problem, really."he replies. She pulls herself back."When did you get to buy these?"she asks, studying them."This morning. I got up extra early to get them."he answers. She's studies them for a few more moments, then a devilish grin crosses her face."How about we test these bad boys out?"she asks."I'd be offended if you didn't ask."Arnold replies, mirroring her expression and both blondes rush to get their skates on.
After a few hours of skating, both teens decide to get home so they can eat and continue their project. After reading, discussing, and writing, they're pooped. They roll onto his carpet and giggle and howl at the simplest of things. From childhood memories to things around his room."This is the best."Helga smiles."It's like a lifelong sleepover."Arnold agrees. Then Helga gets serious and sits up."But I know it won't last forever..."she whispers."What do you mean?"Arnold asks, sitting up also."I mean, I can't stay here forever. At least not Scott-free. I'm going to have to find somewhere else to stay soon. Your grandparents have bills to pay and other people need homes. Plus it's not up to your family to take care of me." Helga says. Arnold is silent for a minute, thinking all this over."Where are you going to go?"he whispers, almost inaudible, knowing what she said was true. Helga shrugs. "I don't know. Maybe a home or something. Just somewhere long enough so I can finish high school and go to college. I kinda wish Bob decided to kick me out a little closer to graduation."Helga answers. Arnold looks at her."Don't say that. He shouldn't have kicked you out anyway. Or even beat you for that matter..but you can stay with us. It's no problem because you know my grandparents love you, and they're kindhearted people. They'd let you stay for as long as you need."Arnold responds."Yea, but people get tired of things Arnold. Especially me. ️" Helga retorts. "That's not true, don't say that!"Arnold replies. "Yea, okay buddy. I'm gonna go to bed, goodnight."Helga says. "No, wait, Helga!"He calls out after her, reaching from her hand. She yanks it out of his and is already halfway out his door."Goodnight Arnold!"she calls out, and storms to her room. His door swings close a bit and he rubs a hand down his face in stress. He gets up, and turns out his light, ready to go to bed since he had nothing else to do.
A few hours into the night, a storm is surging and Helga is sitting in a knee-to-chest position in her bed. She thinks about Bob, and her life, and what she's going to do,and where she's going to go, and Arnold. Soon the thoughts overwhelm her mind. Her eyes water, and she cries. Not a loud, mental breakdown that she wanted to do, but a good one for the moment. A silent, yet hard once. The surging thunderstorm is what her screams were. She sits in the dark, silently crying her eyes out.
