Where Demons Dwell

Chapter 1

She felt the cold air brush against her skin as she got out of the car. She wrapped her arms around her body in an attempt to get some warmth. The giant old house in front of her stood high. It intimidated her with its dark external design. She liked old houses and stuff but...there was something...different about this house. Something she couldn't explain. She heard one of the car doors slam and then a small voice called her name.

"Harper?" her little sister, Haylee, grabbed onto her hand. She looks down at her and smiled. Haylee looked up at her with these eyes that look nothing like her own. Haylee had her stuffed animal elephant in her other hand.

"Mhmm?" Harper said looking up at the setting sky. The light breeze sent a shiver though her.

"Is this our new home?" she asked.

"Yep." Mum answered for her. Harper turned her hand to see her mum carrying a box that had 'Kitchen

Stuff' written on it with Sharpie.

"Do want any help?" Harper asked.

"Nah! This is our home! Go explore! Find the bedroom you want!" Mum said walking up the stairs and opening the door with box still in her arms.

"Yay!" Haylee yelled, letting go of her hand and pushing through Harper and her mum. Harper heard mum sigh as she stepped through the doorway. As Harper took a step toward the front door, something dark flew past

Her eyes. She jumped back and blinked blankly. Her head followed the dark object. It twirled in the wind then gracefully landed onto the grass, right next to a bird bath. She walked over to it and realized what it was. It was black, woven hat, with a big black lace bow on the side. It reminded her of something her great grandma would have worn.

"Where did this come from?" she whispered to herself. She looked over her shoulder. There was no one that could have dropped it near the house. The house was on a hill. If you went into the backyard you could see the whole village and the ocean and some farm land but where could the hat come from. There were no other houses around either... She picked the hat up off the ground. She brushed off some off the dirt that clung on to the bottom of it. She examined it, turning it around and around looking at every inch of it. There was no tag, no name, nothing that could tell her where it came from. Her eyes flickered to the bird bath. An orange, October leaf floated around in the old, brownish water. A blur of an image appeared in the rain water. She looks more closely at it. Finally, she saw a pair of blue eye starring back at her. Wavy, blonde hair framed a pale face. But Harper had hazel eyes, and straight black hair. She stumbled back and she felt her heart almost burst.

"Harper, honey, are you okay?" she twirled around on her heel and inhaled sharply. Her mother looked at her with a confused face. Harper hid the hat behind her back, hoping her mum wouldn't see it.

"Err... Ha, yeah." she laughed nervously.

"Okay, well find a room that you like. There are 8 rooms to choose from and each room is a different theme!" Her mother smiled cheerfully and walked over to the car. Harper just nodded her head and hopped up the stairs.

"Oh and Harper!" her mum called. Harper stopped at the doorframe still holding the hat to where her mum couldn't see it. She turned just her head toward the car.

"Yeah?" Harper asked nervously, shuffling her feet around in the dirt, making abstract shapes and such.

"Go make sure Haylee is okay and then once you both have found the rooms you like, come down and help unpack." her mother said, picking up a box that said antiques.

"Sure thing..." she said and then walked inside of the house that would change her in ways she never imagined.
