Introduction-Baby steps

“Come on, Beth sweetie.” Eartha pleaded.

“What do you really expect from her?” He scoffed.

“Oh shut up D.” She turned back to the baby who was wriggling on her high chair. “Come on Liz, just say something! Mama, Dada, Gross looking baby food.” She said looking at the pot of green mush she was attempting to feed the baby in between the ambiguous talking lessons.

“Face it, she started crawling later than most children, she wakes up later than most as well. She’s just lazy!”

“She’s probably picked that up from you!” Eartha gave the mush to Darwin so that he could feed Elizabeth and left the room.

“Hello darlin’. Can you eat nicely for daddy?”  The baby gurgled something which in her head sounded something like ‘Yes Dada!” but to Darwin it just seemed to be series of gargles.

Dim light from the window flowed into the living room of the Fletcher house hold. It was starting to get dark but a lamp with a floral shade on it and the TV screen made it easy to see in the cosy house.

Eartha and the baby were playing with some colourful wooden blocks on the carpet and playing ‘Godzilla’. Elizabeth giggled joyfully as she whacked down her mother’s carefully built block buildings as her father had to constantly shift his position on the sofa to get a good view of some police show.

“Look, I’m knackered. I’ve been working all day; can you amuse her for a bit?” Eartha gave the child one last kiss and cuddle then went to sit on the sofa, she automatically changed the channel.

“Arrg!” Darwin shouted and he sprawled he wooden blocks all over the floor and picked up the child. Still suspended in his arms he blew a raspberry on the little girl’s tummy. She giggled uncontrollably.

“Nabaglleee… no!” Eartha suddenly snapped to attention.

“She talked!”

“Told you she likes me more.” Darwin mused, smiling jokily at his beloved wife.

“Mama.” Elizabeth said reaching out and clinging to Eartha’s sleek black hair with her small fingers. Eartha seemed to melt. She reached out for her adopted daughter and cradled her in her arms.

“What were you saying dear?” Eartha said looking up at Darwin.

“I was telling you how much I love you.” Darwin said reaching down and kissing his wife on the lips. They both smiled and the baby giggled reaching out for a kiss of her own. Bother her parents kissed her cheeks.

“Time for sleep my lil’ babe.” Eartha cooed to the baby.

“You can’t tell me what to do!” Darwin joked, attempting to sound offended. Eartha rolled her eyes and took baby Elizabeth to her crib and kissed her goodnight. Darwin who had followed them up the stairs got a book out from a shelf in the nursery and read to the child until she drifted to sleep.
