The Ways of the Heart

Chapter 1

Hey guys so this is my first book...in a VERY long time. I hope you enjoy this.

"BEEP BEEP..." My pager goes off at 4 in the morning.

I know I have to answer it. I know I have to help. I turn on my lamp and squint at my pager.

"911"-- better get ready.

I drag myself out of bed and put on a pair of dark royal blue scrubs. I put on my watch and grab my stethoscope. As I head out the door-in a rush due to the message in my pager- I grab a bagel because I know I won't have time for a good breakfast. I walk to my car, a black 1967 Chevrolet Impala- like the one from Supernatural. I drive to the hospital.

When I get there, the ER is mess.

"Where do you need me," I ask Dr. Banks, the Chief of Surgery.

"Trauma Room 1," he replies, "Remember Dr. Gramm, always Hope for the best, but prepare for the worse."

I nod and head towards the room.

"What's going on?" I ask as soon as I walk in the door.

"22 year old male, caucasion, with an Intra ventricular Hemmorhage, Right Pneumothorax..."

I look at who was presenting. I know him.

Dr. Elijah James.

"He going to surgery to fix the bleeding on his brain. Then he's all yours," he says.

"Okay," I reply as we meet eye contact.

He looks away as the patient get pushes out of the room and I'm left to stand there all alone.

Soon I walk out. Before I can make NY way to another patient the Chief grabs my arm in protest.

"We need to talk Dr. Gramm," he says in a stern voice and I'm left to think I've done something wrong.

"Yes Chief?" I say back unsure of what is to come.

"First of all good morning. Second, I need you to show our new attending around the hospital; Dr. James, and last I need you start considering about maybe taking role as Chief as I'm stepping down to retire," he explains.

"Oh um... Okay. I'll be sure to put some thought to it," I answer not sure what to think, so I walk away and find Dr. James that way I can do my duty and get on with my day.
