It was halfway through the day and I was already exhausted, and our brief break for lunch hadn't helped as I hoped it would. Not only that but we hadn't even gone to any of Robynn and Laua's training courses. We had just sat through a few lectures. They weren't even anything magical they were basic classes: math, English and so on. Nick was exhausted too, and it was pretty obvious. I could only imagine how I looked.
"Come on guys, we haven't even gotten to the exciting stuff yet." Robynn said, looking over her shoulder at us. Laura chuckled.
"Just wait, they'll wake up on a minute." Laura said, quickening her pace. Nick groaned as we both jogged to keep up. We came to a set of double glass doors that lead out into an open courtyard. Robynn pulled one of the doors open and motioned for us to follow her.
"Welcome to Arch Libra's Vara's room." Laura said smugly with and exaggerated bow. "You could hardly call it a room though." Robynn smiled back at us. Birch trees grew up at the corners of the courtyard creating a leafy dome. Soft golden light filtered through the leaves creating spots of lights on the grass. White flowers climbed up the cobblestone walls. They emitted a soft yellow light that brightened the shadowy courtyard.
"Does she teach botany?" Nick asked, admiring the room, a smile pulled at Robynn's face.
"So that's what y'all see." Robynn said looking around. I furrowed my brow.
"What do you mean?" Nick asked.
"You'll see soon enough." Laura said turning to the second set of doors on the opposite side of the courtyard. She held them open for us to follow through, Robynn sighed and practically shoved us through them.
"Come on, she is one person whose class you do not want to be late for."
The next room was a huge green house. The ceiling was a dome of cloudy glass with huge trees whose limbs were pressed up against it. It was like walking into a rainforest. Palm trees and bushes crowded around the base of the trees and colorful flowers brought small bursts of color to the vast green. Vines wove through the trees and the trees housed birds of many shapes and sizes. A bird with an elongated beak and stick like legs stalked the shrubs, its scarlet feathers plainly seen through the leaves.
"Well she is in an interesting mood today." Robynn mumbled.
"Yeah, no kidding." Laura scoffed, looking around the green house.
"One minute and fifteen seconds. Not exceptional but not late."
Suddenly a woman appeared in front of us. She was short. Very short. She only stood about five feet. She had her curly brown hair pulled into a ponytail that barely hung to the back of her neck. She had very sharp features and elegant pale blue eyes that gave her a cold authority. She had well defined muscles on her arms and legs and had a very intimidating posture. Robynn dipped her head.
"Arch Libra Vara." Laura and Robynn said in unison. Arch Vara smiled politely at them then glanced over at Nick and I. Immediately her demeanor changed. Her smile disappeared and she crossed her arms over her chest.
"I will have to inform your teachers you are late and give you both extra exercises during training."
Nick and I stood there stunned for a moment. She was the professor to actually acknowledge Nick and I where there. Robynn coughed to get Arch Vara's attention. The Arch looked distastefully over at Robynn.
"Do you have something to add Robynn?" She asked, raising her eyebrow.
"These are our.... Guests." Robynn said nervously. The Arch clenched her jaw.
"I assume they will be sitting in on your demonstration." Arch Vara said turning her back to us. Robynn had barely mumbles a yes before the Arch resumed talking. "Excellent, follow me. You will be sitting with the rest of the class." Suddenly the greenhouse flickered like static on a television screen, then disappeared. Replacing the rainforest was what looked to be a school gym. The walls had large circular windows framed by concrete bricks, and a series of catwalks were suspended from the ceiling.
"Red! Keep up!" The Arch called over her shoulder. It took me a minute to realize she was referring to me. I ran to catch up to her and Nick. She led us to a platform. I looked back at Robynn and Laura who had moved to a rack of some kind and were pulling things off of it and examining them. I joined Nick and the Arch on the platform, it slowly started to lift into the air, bringing us to a door that stuck out of the wall. The circular window stood a few yards down.
"You are new so I'll make it easy for you." The Arch said turning toward the wall placing her hand behind her back. "You will observe Robynn and Laura. I will not ask you any questions as you don't know what to look for, but watch to see how they use their powers." The platform came to a bumpy stop. She glanced over her shoulder at us.
"This whole class is made up of Leos. If they're smart, they'll know you were coming." She placed her hand on a pad next to the door.
As we walked through the door, there was a rush of cool air. The room was completely dark, the only light came from the window that looked over the arena. Except on this side the window was rectangular, and stretched the entire length of the wall.
"Just think of it as a two way mirror. On the outside it looks like a wall, on the inside it looks like a window." The Arch said gesturing to the wall. She looked over her classroom.
"Hina, I believe you know them, make room." The Arch said looking at a blue haired student in the back. Hina dipped her head and cleaned her table. The Arch left with the same hiss from the door. The room was built like a college classroom with terraced seats. Four rows of tables were built into the terraces, only half of them were filled. Nick and I walked to Hina's empty table. I sat between Hina and Nick. Suddenly a voice cracked over the intercom.
"Places please." It said, its voice echoing throughout the gym. Robynn and Laura walked into view and turned their backs to each other.
"Five." The intercom began to count down.
"Four." Slowly the lights dimmed, leaving only a single spotlight on Robynn and Laura.
"Three."
"Two."
"One."
