I woke up to the sound of someone pounding on my door. I watched in the darkness as my door shook. Please be Madam Carmen...
"What?!" I asked as I opened my door. Maxwell stood there with his fist still raised. He smiled, dropped his fist, and shook his head.
"You shouldn't lie. It'll get you in trouble." He said. I had a sinking feeling he knew exactly who I was but I decided to deny.
"Oh yeah? What have I lied about exactly?" I asked him, folding my arms.
"Oh, come on. Alaina..." He paused with an evil smile before continuing, "Jordan."
"So, you caught me. What do you want?" I asked, fear gripping my heart. What did they want with me?
"I want to know why you lied. The other two don't know about you yet." Maxwell said. I sighed and folded my arms.
"You guys are-" I started before a loud roar interrupted me.
"Gold. Is your aunt sitting on a big pile of gold right now?" Maxwell asked suddenly, narrowing his eyes at the sky.
"No, but it's Merry Weather Week. A lot of lords stay here for the jousting tournament a mile off." I told him.
"Where do they keep their cash?" Maxwell asked as the barn exploded and we flew backwards.
"The barn." I moaned as he pulled me up.
"We need to get out of here." He said and he whistled. I screamed as a dragon, large and red, dropped into the flaming barn. It threw its head back and lit up the night sky with a column of fire.
"Here, Midnight," Maxwell called. I turned towards the forest as the trees began to move.
"What is that?" I asked, stumbling back.
"You'll see." Maxwell said with a grin.
A tall creature stepped out of the trees. The light reflected off its eyes and of its...scales?
"Come on." Maxwell pushed me forward and helped me on the dark dragon. Maxwell climbed on in front of me.
"Up and away." Maxwell said as he patted the monster's head. I felt it's back arch as it jumped into the air.
"It's a dragon!" I screamed as I held onto Maxwell for dear life. I was going to die.
"Yeah! He doesn't bite!" Maxwell yelled back, "Usually!"
"This is crazy!" I screamed as we started to fly away. I looked back at the flaming barn.
I was on a dragon. A dragon.
"We can't just leave them!" I yelled, looking back as the dragon caused chaos,
"We can, Princess." Maxwell said without looking back.
"You're just going to let those people die?!" I screamed at him.
"I'm not the only dragon rider here!" He yelled back.
"Maxwell, please." I cried as I heard screams.
"Hold on tight, Princess." He said as the dragon swerved to the left and we flew back towards the flames.
"Don't call me that." I said angrily.
"Why not? Doesn't every little girl want to be a princess?"
"I'm not little!" I screamed as the dragon dived under a blast of flames.
"Hang on!" Maxwell yelled as we burst up and I felt Midnight, our dragon, heat up. Before I could ask Maxwell, Midnight let out a huge blast of flames at the giant red dragon. Need I mention the fact that it was probably three times larger than Midnight?
The red dragon let out a roar before shooting fire at us. I held on to Maxwell as Midnight flew higher to avoid the flames.
"Come on!" Maxwell called at the dragon.
The dragon raised it's face and let out a roar before raising it's wings. I held my breath as we turned away and sped away, with the dragon on our heels.
"What now?!" Maxwell asked.
"What?! You're the dragon rider!" I yelled at him.
"You made me turn back, Princess!" Maxwell yelled back.
"Call me that again and I'll throw you off this dragon!"
"I'll like to see you try!" I sighed and looked forward. I couldn't see anything besides the black mass of the trees and the moon. Of course, I saw red every few moments from the dragon behind us. Then I saw a glint. Something shining off the moon or the moon shining off water.
"Look! Is that water up ahead?" I asked him.
"Yeah, have a plan, Princess?" He asked.
"Stop it." I replied absently.
"What's the plan?"
"We're going to dive into the water!" I replied. The water, Lake Macobar, I believed, came near and became clearer.
"What?!"
"Will the dragon follow us?"
"Probably not!" Maxwell admitted as Midnight began to descend. The dark water came closer and closer.
I held my breath as we slammed into the water. I was ripped away from Maxwell as I struggled to find the surface.
