~CHAPTER1~
See you later Mike” I called out to Mike our Janitor.” He’s a good guy. His birthday is coming. I’ve got to get him something nice.” I thought to myself. I made my way to my new X5. I can’t wait till I get home so I can relax and watch re-runs of Full House.
Just then a car came out of nowhere “BEEP!” I felt the world grow dark around me. Soon the darkness overtook me.
I woke up to find myself in an unfamiliar room. Beep Beep Beep. Am I in the hospital? “Yes you are.” A doctor came out from the corner where I think he was examining me. “What happened?” I asked him. “You were in a car crash.” He said. Suddenly everything hit me. The car crash and the black dots. “My car “I whispered. “They found the man who hit your car and he is paying for all damages.” He reassured me. “That’s great!” I exclaimed. He came over to me and said “Well let me tell you what’s not great. Your injuries are very severe and you need surgery. The surgery you need is the PLX Linnex surgery which has high risks. Only one doctor has the abilities to perform it successfully but he won’t agree.” I was puzzled. Why wouldn’t he want to perform the surgery? Maybe I can ask him? As if he read my mind he said “Maybe we can have you try to convince him and he would listen.
Just then two doctors came into my room.”I told you already no. I won’t do it. “Said the one in the blue scrubs. “You have to Drew. She will die without it.” said the other one. Hmm Drew. Clearing my throat I got their attention. “Can I talk to him for a while? I asked them.
“Sure.” They said as they left the room. When they left I turned to Drew who wouldn’t even look at me. I felt angry. How could he just say no? All my life I’ve been turned down for everything and now I was being turned down from being able to live again? “Look, I’m sorry but I just can’t do the surgery. “He told me. “Why? Is it me? Is it because you don’t want anything to do with me? Because if that’s the reason then just let me die. There’s no point in living anyway. I said to him feeling hurt inside.
He rushed over to my bed side and said to me “Don’t ever say that! You are a beautiful person and I would love to get to know you. But I just can’t do this surgery.”
I realized that something in his past had hurt him. He kept the pain hidden but I can see right through his eyes. “It’s better to tell someone than keep it in.” I told him.
Taking a deep breath he began” It happened 4 years ago. The same surgery that has to be performed on you had to be performed on a little girl. She was the cutest thing ever. I was the only one who was able to perform it. I remember the day of the surgery like it was yesterday. She was keeping a brave face but I could tell she was scared on the inside.” By this point he was crying.
He continued “Before we put her to sleep she told me ‘Take care of my family if anything happens to me’. I promised her. Everything was going great during the surgery when suddenly her heart rate started crashing. We were doing everything we could to save her but she was gone. When I heard the words Time of Death” 2:34 P.M I felt terrible.”
I pulled next to me and hugged him. Knowing that he needed comfort I let him sob into my shirt. “Telling-her-parents-was so-hard” he said in between breaths. “Shh, Shh” I told him because he needed to calm down. Soon, he stopped crying and stood up. “I’m sorry for that” he said to me. “It was fine I reassured him.” He turned to me and said” Ever since that day I was never able to perform the surgery ever again.”
As he turned to leave I stopped him “Mackenzie White. Age 8. Came into the emergency room because her body hip down was paralyzed just like me. She needed the PLX Linnex surgery done just like me.” He turned around puzzled “How do you know all of that?” he asked. “I’m Sarah White and I am Mackenzie’s older sister.”
