Pewds pov

I wake up the next morning to the screeching of sirens. I jolt up and see my fellow troop mates in the same state of duress. The Sargent runs into the room and starts to bark orders.

"Listen up! Enemy troops are on their way and we need to get you all underground!"

"Aren't we going to fight?" Minx asks.

"You haven't had nearly enough training to fight in real combat! Reinforcements are headed here now but we have to move!"

We all jump up and scramble to get dressed. I throw on my camo pants and jacket as well as my boots and supply belt. I had a Swiss Army knife, a canteen, a small hand gun, and a walky-talky. I look around and see that we are all dressed the same and are being herded out by a few guards. I grabbed a small bag with a few personal items and stowed it on my belt before following the rest of my troop. We made it about half way to the bunker before the onslaught of bullets reached us. We tried to run but a volley of fire cut Mark and I off from the rest of the group. We hid behind a large atv and watched our troop run in the opposite direction. Everyone piled into the cellar except the Sargent who stood, waiting for us. I heard my talky emit static and I held it up to my ear.

"Don't worry! I'm on my way to get you!" She called.

"NO!" Mark and I both screamed.

"Get to safety! We'll be there in just a minute!" I yell into the device.

She was about to object but a bullet whizzed past her face and left a small scratch on her nose. She looked at us with sad and frightened eyes before shaking her head. "Get the rest of them out of here! We will meet you at other end!" I yell. All bunkers had two ends that where separated by a steal door. The door would only open if both sides grated access so that enemy's couldn't sneak into a bunker unnoticed. She nodded before climbing down the steps and looking back at us as the door to the outside closed. Right before it sealed shut, I saw the red haired woman give us a heartfelt salute and the faces of our comrades with grave expressions.

I turned back too Mark and took out my pistol. He did the same and I motioned towards a small shack about three meters away. He nodded and we sprinted towards it, barely missing the incoming fire. I took another shaky breath before peeking my head around the corner and looking at our attackers. There seemed to be about twenty men shooting directly at us while the others must be in other parts of the camp. I looked back in the direction we needed to go and saw the entrance too our bunker about half a kilometer away. Unfortunately, the cover between here and there was limited and spread out. I gulped and decided that a large bolder was better cover then nothing. I nodded towards it and Mark gave a breathless thumbs up. We sprinted towards it before sliding behind the rock. I heard a pained gasp and looked back to see a light graze on Marks shoulder. I gave him a worried look but he waved me off. The next cover was another atv but it was quite a bit away. I pointed, Marks nodded. I sprint towards it and not until I got about half way did I realize Mark had stayed behind the bolder. My walky talky went off again and I held it to my ear.

"JACK!" Mark screamed into it. "JACK! CAN YOU HEAR ME!"

Oh no! He can't be... He wouldn't.... Would he?

In every movie with a battle scene, someone makes a big confession before sacrificing themselves. What better time to let everything out, then when you think you're not going to make it?

"MARK! DONT! YOURE GOING TO BE FINE!" I shout into the device but he doesn't listen.

"Mark?" I hear Jack say.

"What's going on you two?!" Ken shouts.

"MARK! NOW IS NOT THE TIME!" I scream as I take a shot at a soldier who was a bit too close for comfort.

"JACK?! I..."

"DONT!"

"I LIKE YOU! LIKE A LOT! I KNOW ITS PROBABLY THE LAST THING YOU WANT TO HEAR RIGHT NOW BUT..."

"MARK YOURE GOING TO BE FINE!" I shout. I didn't realize the tears streaming down my face until he looked directly at me with sad eyes.

"Say hi to Ryan for me." He says before running out, in the opposite direction of the bunker. Nearly all the fire was aimed in his direction, giving me a clear shot towards the end. Towards safety. But I just stood there. I stood and watched Mark, one of the first friends I made here.

Mark, the man that had given me my husbands last sober words to me.

Mark, the man who had trusted me enough to tell me of his growing affection towards another man.

Mark, the man that is sacrificing himself for me right now.

I just watched as the bullet caught his side and he crumpled to the ground.

Cry pov.

I wake up to a splitting headache and look at the clock to see that it's nearly eight am. In the corner, I see Russ asleep in a chair. "R-Russ?" I asked.

He jolted awake and rubbed his eyes. "Oh, you're up!"

"What happened?"

"Um well..."

My heart sunk as I noticed the mess around us. "We're we drinking?"

"You were. I just came because Felix called me and said the you were drinking yourself to death so I had to come save you."

I gulped and felt my eyes start to water. "F-Felix saw me like that?" The first time I talk to him since he left and that's what he sees?! What is wrong with me?! He's at war for christs sakes and now he has to worry about me back home too!! God I'm an idiot!! The tears fall faster and Russ comes over and puts a hand on my shoulder.

"It's gonna be ok." He says and smiles. "He knows this is hard on you. He doesn't blame you for it."

"But I do." I whisper.

He sighs. "Look, I'm gonna go get you a glass of water and an Advil. Why don't you try to call him and you can clear everything up?" He pats my shoulder before leaving the room. I sigh and walk over to my computer. I doubt he can answer right now but I thought I'd give it a try. God I don't even know where he's stationed. He probably would have told me last night if I wasn't black out drunk. The call rang a few more times before I just gave up on it and grabbed my phone. I dialed the recruitment offices and rubbed my temples.

"Hello, government enrollment office. How may I help you?" A woman asked.

"Hi, yes I'm trying to get ahold of a recruit named Felix Terry."

I heard the clicking of a keyboard before she let out a confused sigh. "I'm sorry but for some reason I can't seem to contact the base he is stationed at. Would you like to talk to a representative? He may be able to give you more answers then me."

My breathing hitched and I let out a tentative; "y-yes p-please." She switched me over to a man who introduced himself as corporal Brian Shnerder.

"It seems like the base you're trying to contact called for reinforcements not three hours ago."

"R-reinforcements?"

"I can only guess that the camp was attacked." He says sadly. "I'm very sorry. We will call you back as soon as we have any sort of news."

I thank him shakily before hanging up.

What if he doesn't make it out and the last time we saw each other, I was to far gone to even remember it. And how he must be feeling right now...

I let out a loud sob as Russ re-enters the room with a grave look. He must of at least got enough of the conversation to know that it wasn't good. He walks over and wraps an arm around my shoulders as I weep.

I feel so stupid and helpless! How could I have done that?! He has to know that I love him! That I only did it because I loved him! Right?

I'm such an idiot!
