Ava glanced at her reflection in the rearview mirror. She gripped the steering wheel firmly with one hand well brushed the lose piece hair out of her face with the other. Her eyes became glossy as she continued to stare at herself, no, she thought as she squeezed her eyes shut and slammed on the gas to accelerate faster. She was on the abandoned highway that lead only to an old waterfall and rusty bathroom in the middle of nowhere. Her hands trembled as she tried to resist more tears, no no! she thought and shook herself out of it. The last thing she needed was to cry more. She was doing this to end the crying. Her mind raced with millions of thoughts yet she kept her foot firmly placed on the gas. Ava picked her head up to see that her exit was in just a few feet so she slowed down and turned onto the dirt road. She felt as if she was going to throw up and her heart was going to pop out of her chest at any minuet. She was surrounded by trees and rocks, all she could hear was the quiet sound of her car and birds that where flying above. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, trying to rap her head around the fact that she was going to do this. There was no other way. She was going to do this.
Ava parked her car in a divot off the road. She was far enough away that she could only hear the soft roar of the waterfall yet still close enough that if you where to look into the forest, you wouldn't be able to see her car. Ava shakily undid her seat belt and climbed out of the car. As she stepped out she could feel her heart leap to her throat and time stop. Her head started spinning and he ears became completely clogged, to the point where every sound around her was either extremely muffled or on mute. She had only felt this way once before, she knew that it was her body's way of a panic attack. She crouched to the ground and hugged her knees to her chest as she breathed deeply through her nose. Trying to calm her body down, Ava stared up at the gigantic trees and down at the small pebbles below her. After a few minuets she began to regain her hearing and slowly stood up. After letting a few tears run out of her eyes, Ava began her walk to the waterfall.
As she approached her breathing became steadier and her heart rate began to slow down to a normal pace. All she could hear now was the booming waterfall, and the beat of her heart in her ears. She hesitantly turned a corner to where dirt and pebbles met damp, large, rocks and a swift moving river. Her eyes darted back behind her to make sure nobody was there, then up to sky one last time. Her lose jean shorts vibrated, she had forgotten her phone was in her pocket. She immediately removed it and gently set in on the big rock in front of her. As she lifted her head from her crouched position her eyes landed to something not 10 feet away from her. Shoes. Two black nike sneakers with a pair of socks laying next to them. Ava furrowed her eyebrows and blinked a few times to make sure it was real. She thought she would be here alone, she thought she could be in peace, the thought that the road was empty and no one else had parked so why where someones shoes there? All these thoughts raced through Ava's head as she slowly stood up and surveyed the area. There, by the edge of the waterfall was a boy.
