I was pacing the waiting room waiting to hear the news about Chrissy. I hope it wasn't anything serious but... A doctor with a name tag that said Jared was heading towards me I ran at him and showered him with my questions
"Is she okay? Can she come home tonight? Is the reason she fainted all my fault? What ca-" he interrupted me "ma'am please calm down your friend is doing just fine. Now what is you relationship to the patient."
I sighed "I am her best friend her parents are out of town and she was staying at my house for the weekend. I called and they are on there way home. My parents are on there way now. May I please see her now?"
He motioned for me to follow him and he lead me down multiple hallways until we reached room 32. I walked into the room and gasped. Chrissy was hooked up to millions of tubes. She was pale and her eyes were dull. she looked at me with a sad smile "how are you?"
I sad quietly. She laughed half heartedly. "Honestly I've been better."
She started crying "I have leukemia Paige. Stupid leukemia." I tried not to cry I really did but I couldn't help it I ran and hugged her and we cried together. I had to leave about an hour later because visiting hours ended. My parents took me home and I couldn't sleep. Why Chrissy of all people Chrissy got luekemia. She could die and it would be all my fault. I tried to forget about Chrissy and tried to get some sleep because I had school tomorrow. I'm a freshman and apparently I can't be late to school.I got 56 texts and 60 calls from people who wanted to know what was wrong with Chrissy I did not get any sleep. A girl from my softball team named Meredith gave me a ride to school, she was a junior meaning she could drive. "Hi Paige, how are you doing? I heard what happened to Chrissy. I'm so sorry." I smiled Meredith was the only person out off all the people who texted and called me that cared about me too. Yeah I know it's kind of selfish but even though Chrissy is sick I can still be acknowledged right?... RIGHT? Okay, it might be selfish, but still. "Yeah I'm doing great, thanks for asking. Chrissy has leukemia and her parents are in Detroit right now trying to get flight here. Its all my fault." I said it all in one breath.
Meredith slowly pulled to the side of the road and looked at me "how can it be your fault, if you think that the little argument made Chrissy get leukemia then you are wrong. Chrissy had luekemia way before last night and if anything you saved her. If you hadn't gotten into that argument she wouldn't have fainted and gone to the hospital. We would have never found out about her leukemia and she would be getting worse by the day instead of getting treated by doctors. So Paige it is not your fault." She turned the car back onto the road and we road the rest of the way to school in silence. As she got out of the car I grabbed her arm. "What" she asked me "thanks Meredith. That really helped." She smiled "anytime" we walked into the building in a comfortable silence. I had Spanish first which luckily I was pretty good at so I didn't have to have all my focus on the class, so I thought about what Meredith said. She is right, it not my fault.
