It was a dark day, the rain was pouring from the great grey clouds that covered the sky, no sun being permitted to shine through. Nothing was audible over the raindrops beating heavily on the hospital Windows. Mrs Avery was crying in silence, lying motionless on the hospital bed. She was pale and looked exhausted. Mrs Avery was supposed to have given birth to her daughter that day, the child whom she had waited so long for, and that day should have been so happy. Tragically, the baby had been stillborn and the long awaited should be joyous occasion turned in to nothing but pain and misery for her and her husband. She'd been laying on the bed, staring blankly through the window at the dreary weather which reflected her mood and emotional state so perfectly, when the nurse approached holding a small bundle in her arms. It was a baby. Her baby.

"Mrs Avery" she asked quietly, trying to awaken her from her trance. Mrs Avery turned to look at the nurse who smiled gently and said, "looks like you've got a fighter here" and passed her the tiny squirming bundle that was her baby daughter.

Mrs Avery's eyes opened wide and filled with tears as she looked down at her child who she hugged tightly with a firm gentleness only mothers can acquire. To her, the baby in her arms was the most beautiful thing she had ever laid her eyes on. "I think I'll name her Mona" said Mrs Avery softly.

"She needs some rest, and so do you", the nurse whispered and carefully took the little girl back in to her arms. "Yes" said Mrs Avery as she turned her head back towards the window. The rain was still falling from the sky just as the tears were still falling down her face, but these tears, were tears of joy.

"She is going to be a great witch", said the nurse, as she left the room and headed for the nursery, leaving Mrs Avery to relax in peace knowing her daughter was alive and well.

Although nurse probably isn't the right term, healer would be more appropriate. As the world Mrs Avery lives in is a magical world full of witches and wizards. The healer was a witch. Mrs Avery was a witch. Mona was a witch.

That day, October 5th 1978, was the day that Mona Helena Avery, the only child of Claire and Henry Avery, was born. Mona inherited the same jet black hair as both her parents and her father's dark mysterious eyes.

As she grew everyone around her could tell that she was going to be a magnificent person one day, and that was her dream. "To become someone important, and to help people. That's my dream" she used to say.

As her 11th birthday approached, she received a letter. Delivered by an owl. Sealed with the red stamp of Hogwarts. Opening that letter was the first step she took in achieving her dream and starting a new chapter in her life.

The Avery family, like most other wizarding families, were at Diagon Alley. Mona was walking next to her mother, scared she might get lost in the bumbling crowds. Identically dressed in long black robes with a small 'A' in the left-hand side of the chest. Mr Avery was wearing dark blue robes, with dark green stripes around the collar and sleeves.

"Mum, when am I going to get my wand?" Mona asked, smiling at her mother. "Soon", she replied. Claire looked at the list they had received along with Mona's Hogwarts acceptance letter a few months earlier. She went down the list saying 'check' after everything they had already bought. " in fact, your wand is the next thing on the list we need to buy" she said, smiling back at her overexcited daughter. They had already bought her uniform and robes, books, parchment and quills.

"Here we are", said Mr Avery, pointing to a shop with big gold letters spelling out 'OLLIVANDERS'. "Ollivander has been one of the finest wandmakers in the world for years" he said as they entered the little store.
