Castle Black rose out of the winter night like a promise.

The gates parted at Harriet's approach, the wards recognizing her magic instantly - the feeling was welcoming, familiar, protective. The moment she crossed the threshold, the tension she hadn't realized she was carrying eased from her shoulders. It was always like this. Castle Black did not demand explanations. It did not question her choices. It simply held her.

Home, she thought, the word settling deep in her chest.

Her footsteps echoed softly through the halls as she made her way inside, the ancient stones humming faintly beneath her feet. She could feel the wards as she passed - layers upon layers of carefully woven magic, elegant and powerful. Without meaning to, she slowed, studying the way they overlapped, how they reinforced one another.

There's a weakness here, she noted absently. If the anchor were shifted...

She shook herself gently out of the thought and continued on, but the familiarity of it brought her comfort. This was where she could think clearly. Where the noise of expectations dulled to something manageable.

It seems like a lifetime ago when she was making her ward stone. Perhaps this summer she could experiment with it again, adapt it, implement it.

In her room, the fire lit itself as she entered, casting warm light across dark wood and star-patterned tapestries. Harriet slipped out of her cloak and set it aside, sitting at the edge of the bed for a moment longer than necessary.

The date had gone well.

Evan had been attentive, thoughtful, kind. He had listened. He had remembered. He had made space for her mind and her magic. She replayed the evening carefully, as though she might find the flaw if she examined it closely enough.

So why do I still feel like this?

She pressed her fingers lightly to her wrist, feeling the steady rhythm of her pulse. There had been no jolt, no spark that left her breathless. Instead, there was steadiness. Safety. Something that could grow into comfort, perhaps even affection.

And yet-

Her thoughts betrayed her, drifting again to the memory she had been trying so hard to keep at bay. The weight of another presence. The way magic had curled around hers without apology. How right it had felt, in a way she did not have words for.

Her stomach tightened.

I don't want this, she thought fiercely. I don't want to be drawn to him. I don't want this to mean something.

She stood and crossed to the mirror, unpinning her hair and letting it fall loose around her shoulders. Her reflection looked composed, calm - doing nothing to reflect the storm she felt beneath the surface.

Evan is good, she reminded herself. He is safe. He is what I'm supposed to want.

She wished, not for the first time, that wanting were something she could command.

As she began laying out her things for the return to school - textbooks stacked neatly, robes folded with care - her thoughts shifted reluctantly to what awaited her. Hogwarts. Classes. Expectations. The carefully maintained distance between who she was becoming and who everyone believed her to be.

Castle Black would not come with her.

The thought stung more than she expected.

She paused, one hand resting against the edge of her trunk, and allowed herself a moment of honesty. She was standing at the edge of something - she could feel it, like pressure building beneath her skin. Two paths pulling at her in different ways. Two loyalties, two futures, neither willing to loosen its grip.
