On a certain day, at a special time and place, there is a room, and in this room, can be found two men, seated at a small table, and between them...a chess board
To one side, sits a man of palest cream, marble and alabaster clothed in a suit of purest light with the face of an angel.
And the other, a man of the darkest hue, a man so dark his very skin seemed to draw in the surrounding light, sucking it in like a vortex, clad in a suit of Gossamer black, a thing of webs and shadows, living night.
The two face each other, silent and stoic, light and day, divide by the board.
Pieces start to appear, pieces of Ivory with Angelic features, and pieces of Ebony with Demonic Visages.
The Darkness moves, a bare flick of the wrist, and a Pawn slides forwards. In the distance, a radio crackles to life, static blaring as it searches for a signal.
The Light ponders for a moment, before sending its own piece forward, mirroring the Darkness.
The Demon smiles.
Back and forth they play, manoeuvring pieces this way and that readying themselves for the first confrontation.
Shadow Bishop takes Light Pawn.
“...and in news today, a priest has been charge with counts of rape and child sex offenses as
new evidence is brought to life..”
The Light pauses, a tear shed for innocence lost.
Pieces fly around the board, each moved followed by the next, and as they fall, the radio spews forth tales.
“Four dead as a man opens fire in a local shopping centre”
“Scientist believe they may have created a new crop that could effectively rid world hunger”
“New evidence shows millions embezzled from charities across the globe”
As the board clears, pieces lying scattered and broken along the sides, the end draws near. The Darkness’s smile widens into a feral grin, for his pieces once again seem to dominate the field.
The Light exhales, and moves it piece.
Across the board the pieces swarm, and slowly, the game changes, Black loses ground as White holds strong.
The smile is gone now, replaced with a blank stare, for this game has been played out countless times before.
The Darkness begins strong, it’s piece ruthless and quick, but slowly, the pieces of Light band together, move in concert, and push back the Dark.
Soon there are barely two pieces a side, The Darkness and the Light evenly matched.
They both watch the board, looking for a move that will win the game...that will decide this feud once and for all. For hours...days...millennia...seconds they stare, willing a move to appear, until, with heavy hearts, they nod to each other.
The pieces reassemble
The Game begins Anew...
