This story also shifts from the past to present day. The past will be in italics, and the present will stay in the normal font.
-
Dusk was a time where Connor should've been asleep, or at least scrolling through his dashboard for a few hours from the comfort of his bed.
Instead, Connor was roaming around the streets of LA. He was wide awake, his body not fazed by the bitter early air as it hit his skin. No matter how hard he had tried, he just couldn't sleep.
The streets were quiet as he walked, his hands tucked into his pockets. He hadn't really considered where he was going or what he was doing. He just needed to take some time to think things through.
And of course, Connor's thoughts led him straight back to Troye.
He hadn't seen Troye for quite a while, since things in his life had got so hectic. With a book coming out, raising money for charity, and an ever-growing YouTube channel under his belt, thoughts of his former friend had slipped his mind.
Yet, the boy suddenly found himself pausing in his tracks. He had the urge to go and visit him, even if it was extremely early and Troye would probably tell him off for it, since he wasn't exactly a morning person.
-
"Happy birthday Con!"
Connor's eyes drifted open steadily as he saw Troye standing over his bed, his hair ruffled and sleep consuming his eyes. Ever since he'd been in LA recording his album, he'd be staying on Connor's sofa.
Connor glanced at his phone before answering, noticing that it was 8am. "Thanks. Aren't you up a little early though?"
Troye yawned, placing his hand over his mouth. "I kind of want to die right now...but it's your birthday, so I guess I'll let it slide. How does it feel to be 22?"
"Awesome actually." Connor grinned, taking a moment to properly sit up in his bed, but not before Troye was pushing him back down.
"Troye, what are you doing..." He began, his tone flustered as Troye kept a hold of his shoulders.
"Don't move. I'm making you breakfast."
Connor quirked his brows, still trying to compose himself. "Can you even cook?"
Troye pretended to look offended. "Of course I can you dumb! Waffles sound good?"
Connor just nodded, not really know what to say due to the close proximity. He felt a little disappointed as Troye moved away, his body suddenly turning cold as the hands left his skin and the boy exited his room.
He couldn't really explain it, the way Troye made him feel. For months he had tried to deny it, hide it, just push it to the back of his mind, but all had just failed. Though he was scared to admit it, Connor knew he liked Troye a lot. More than anyone else in fact.
And as he heard him bustling around the kitchen, humming the lyrics to one of his songs under his breath, Connor let his eyes drift close again, with only thoughts of the Australian in his head.
-
It took Connor a little while to consider whether or not visiting Troye was actually a good idea, but he eventually decided to go. The worst thing that could happen was that he wouldn't answer him, and that wouldn't be so bad...would it?
The security around where Troye had been situated for the past few months was quite heavy, so Connor had to jump the gate. He managed to tear a little of his jeans in the process, but he didn't mind too much. He was just looking forward to seeing Troye after all.
Flowers aligned the fields as Connor advanced forward, each and every colour of which you can possibly imagine planted in the ground. He found himself picking a few as he turned the corner, a bunch of white daisies to be precise. It's not like he wanted to turn up to Troye empty handed.
-
The attempt of making breakfast actually didn't crash and burn like Connor had expected. In fact, the waffles Troye made him were the best he'd ever had.
He also received his birthday present as he ate, swallowing nervously when Troye handed him a thin package.
"You didn't have to get me anything Troye." Connor sighed. "I told you a donation to my charity project would be enough of a gift."
Troye rolled his eyes. "I know. I still wanted to get you a little something though."
The older boy bit his lip at that, but unwrapped the gift nonetheless. He felt his heart beat a little faster as he glanced at what was in his hands.
"I know you wanted to hear some rough cuts of some stuff from the album." Troye shrugged, trying to remain nonchalant. "So I thought I'd give them to you. Not even Tyler has heard these yet."
Connor couldn't find anything to say. He let his sight travel over towards Troye, who looked nervous
"Do you not like it? I knew I should've got you that cat jumper..."
"It's perfect." Connor breathed, holding the CD close. "Seriously, I'll treasure it forever."
Troye laughed at that, before clearing both of their plates. "You're so cheesy sometimes."
-
Connor had eventually navigated his way to Troye, finding him rooted in the exact same spot as always. Even if he wasn't a morning person, Connor wasn't that surprised to see him outside, laying on the grass under the morning sun. Ever since he'd been staying in LA, he'd grown used to sleepless nights.
Connor took a place opposite him, sinking down on the ground and taking a moment to look at him properly.
"I'm sorry I haven't seen you for a while. Things just got crazy." He laughed nervously, placing the flowers in the middle of them both. "How have you been?"
-
Since Troye had to hit the studio, Connor spent the majority of his birthday Skyping with family, grabbing food with some old friends, running into some viewers and listening to the songs Troye gave him.
When Connor listened to some of the songs, it made tears catch in his throat. Troye sounded so vulnerable, singing about the ones who had hurt him, and putting his feelings out there completely for everyone to hear. Connor admired him a lot for that. A part of him longed to do the same.
Troye didn't get home until around about 8pm, and was greeted with the sight of Connor in one of his jumpers, his usual quiff falling flat as he was typing on his laptop.
"You look 'frantastic' in that jumper." Troye paused, before snorting. "Did I actually just say that aloud?"
Connor giggled, trying to disguise his delight as he pushed his laptop to one side. "I wear it all the time. It's comfy."
"I'm still waiting on my thirsty merch." Troye collapsed down onto his seat. "I'll be wearing that all the time."
Connor tipped his head to one side. "Really?"
"Really." Troye yawned. "God, I'm tired."
"Same here. Wanna watch a movie?"
Troye nodded, absent mindedly letting his head fall onto Connor's shoulder and failing to notice his friend was freaking out a little. "Yeah. I'd like that a lot."
-
"I've been great." Connor babbled, crossing his legs on the grass. "My subscribers managed to donate $300,000 to another charity in the past month. They're beyond amazing. My books almost ready too, and I'm getting closer to four million on YouTube. It's insane."
He paused, his heart breaking as Troye remained unresponsive. It was difficult to read him, to know what he was thinking.
It broke Connor a little that no matter how much he talked, it was unlikely Troye was going to reply.
-
Troye eventually fell asleep on Connor that night, his mouth opened slightly as he breathed in and out.
Connor however, was wide awake. It brought him comfort, watching Troye sleep. He looked like he was finally at peace, considering how stressful the last few months had been for him.
And without thinking about it, he found himself pressing his lips against Troye's forehead, carefully drawing away afterwards and closing his own eyes.
"Con...Connor..." Troye spoke sleepily, making Connor grow rigid.
However, the moment passed and he was soon back in dreamland, with Connor falling asleep to the sound of his heavy breathing.
-
"Your album was playing on the radio today. I still have those rough cuts you gave me in September you know."
He let his hand shyly roam up Troye's sides as silence passed between them, his voice slightly desperate as he spoke.
"Talk to me." He whispered. "Please Troye. Say something, anything."
-
They awoke the next morning in a tangled state, with Troye's head somehow resting between Connor's lap and chest, and Connor half lying down on the couch.
They both moved away cautiously, not really saying anything as Connor began to make breakfast. It was Troye's final day of staying with him, since he had to go and make one last collab with Tyler before heading back to Australia.
Connor tried to push it to the back of his mind, the fact that Troye was leaving, as he made him some pancakes and a cup of coffee.
"You spoil me." Troye said, his voice hoarse as he looked at Connor. He was probably unaware of how much it turned on his best friend when he spoke like that, but Connor wasn't complaining.
"I have to. It's your last day with me."
"I know." Troye replied, and Connor swore he could hear something sad in his voice. "Speaking of which, I need to pack. Wanna help me?"
"Of course."
-
Connor exhaled, taking his hands away and wiping his eyes. "I'm sorry I haven't been around Troye. When stuff like this happens...I just try to blank it. I didn't forget about you or anything. I just...I don't know."
Troye was quiet, unfeeling as Connor came closer, his fingers brushing against the markings on his face.
"I wish you'd come back." He whispered. "I wish you'd never left."
-
After packing for a good hour, the time for Troye to leave had arrived.
"We"ll still Skype, right? When you're not too busy for the album or anything."
"Of course Con."
Connor smiled at that, playing with his hands a little. "Good! That's good..."
"Don't I get a goodbye hug then?" Troye eventually said, his arms outstretched.
And of course, Connor fell straight into them, failing to hide his delight as Troye wrapped himself around him. It was kind of funny, how well the both of them fitted together. It managed to bring Connor the most bittersweet kind of feelings.
-
"It's so hard. Trying to stay strong." Connor voice was breaking as he pressed his forehead against Troye's. "I just want you back. I just want you to say something."
-
When they finally pulled away from one another, something felt different. Connor noticed that Troye was staring at him, and his one hand was still touching his waist.
But before he could make any kind of comment on it, Troye's mouth were suddenly on his, softly pecking his lips with minimum movement and managing to send Connor into an unfathomable haze.
Connor was all kinds of dumbstruck as he moved away, his heart racing faster than he ever thought it had the ability to.
"Troye I..." He began, but the younger boy shook his head.
"Last night, you kissed me on the forehead. I was returning the favour."
Connor blushed a deep shade of red. "I didn't...that was nothing..."
"Sure it wasn't." Troye smirked, before grabbing his case. "But I really do have to go now. Speak soon, yeah?"
Connor just dipped his head. "Ye-yeah. Sounds good."
Troye turned on his heels at that, sending a knowing look in Connor's direction before exiting the apartment.
Connor couldn't find the words to say for a long while, He wasn't exactly sure about what had just happened.
So, he just settled on smiling.
Everything suddenly felt a little better.
-
"I love you." Saying the words made Connor feel afraid, but his emotions were finally getting the better of him."I really loved you."
-
If only he had known what was going to happen...he would've made their final goodbye a lot more special.
-
Connor couldn't help but completely breakdown as he glared at Troye's gravestone, the words engraved into the surface so precisely;
In loving memory of Troye.
Son. Singer. Friend to all. May he rest in peace.
June 5th 1995 - September 15th 2014
"It's been six months. Six whole months since the accident." Connor swallowed, shaking his head. "I miss you so much Troye. Everyone keeps telling me that I need to move on, but I can't. I just...I can't."
He took a hold of the daisies again, scattering them all around the only person he had ever truly cared about.
"I'll be back tomorrow." Connor said, the wind starting to pick up around him. "And the next day. Maybe I'll even come back later."
He let himself stand up, pressing his hand against the grave for one last time.
"Whatever happens, I'll be back. And even if you can't hear me, or I can't hear you, we'll listen to one another. I'll always listen to you Troye."
He withdrew his hand, an ache shooting through him as he walked away, wiping his eyes as he glanced towards the clouds.
"Dry my eyes, bring colour to my skies." He whispered bitterly. "If only you could do that now."
