She runs faster and faster, digging deeper, her boots digging into the cold, wet snow. The river below shuddering the bridge as it moves rapidly. A sudden snap and her ankle gives way. She cries out. Bad choice. The sound of pounding feet come closer. Two beady eyes staring hard at her. An ear-splitting screech. A flash of light... then nothing.
Her eyes flutter open, bright fluorescent lights hang above her. She tries to sit up but she can't. Her wrists are attached to leather restraints, along one of her ankles, the other bandaged up tightly. Her eyes moved around the room, coming to rest at the end of the bed she was laying on. A boy sat there, tall, dark hair, wearing what looked like camouflage or army gear. He was reading something, she couldn't see what, some sort of folder with sheets of paper in it. She tried to speak but her voice was dry and weak. She tried again, this time making a noise like a mouse. Getting frustrated, she cleared her throat, catching the boys attention. He closed the folder quickly and got up from his seat. He walked to the side of her bed. Her eyes followed him.
"Hi Sasha, I'm Matt." He says calmly, while removing the restraints, "Sorry, we needed to make sure you didn't lash out when we gave you the medicine."
"How do you know my name? Where am I?" Sasha asks, scared.
"Shh." Matt soothes her, "I can't tell you yet."
"Why not?"
"Colonel Jones would like to speak with you first. There are some clothes and a shower in the bathroom," he says pointing across the large room. Sasha waits for Matt to stand back before getting out of the bed. Her ankle is sore but healed enough to walk on. Sasha stumbles and nearly falls, but Matt catches her before she reaches the ground. His strong arms wrap around her frail body. Sasha looks up into his eyes and sees... kindness... and gentleness.
Matt asks, "Are you okay?"
Sasha pushes off his arms and feels her face blush. "Fine... I'm fine." She walks to the bathroom and closes the door behind her.
