"Come on, ghostie, come freaking get me!" Charlie yelled, backing into the darkened room, brandishing her torch angrily. Why had she agreed to be bait again? You'd think she would have learned her lesson last time, when she ended up trying to punch a demon in the face because she dropped her knife accidentally.
It was a generic. haunted house, found in any horror movie worth watching. The walls were damp and grey, cobwebs stretched from ceiling to wall, and there was even an ancient chandelier above her head. A closet was the only piece of furniture in the room, and it was chained shut and of absolutely no use to her.
Basically, Sam had told her to make as much noise as possible to draw the spirit to her. Charlie had no problem doing this. Her brain had reached the point where all her thoughts were tumbling and jumbling out of her mouth in a panicked, angry mess.
She swung her gun around determinedly as she moved in a circle, watching the door. She held her breath, counting the seconds, feeling the blood and adrenaline pumping round her body.
As if summoned, the translucent form of an old man crept through the door. He was covered in grey blood and carrying a long blade that was also dripping with the stuff; he leered at Charlie, and started limping towards her, then-
BANG!
Suddenly, the cobwebbed chandelier that had been hanging from the ceiling fell, landing with him directly in the middle of it. The ghost howled - the circular edge of the chandelier had been coated with salt. He was stuck!
"Ha! Take that!" Charlie laughed, blowing a strand of red hair out of her face.
"Good work," said Sam, stepping out of the shadows, where he'd been hiding - waiting for Charlie to bring the ghost right into the trap.
"Thanks, I could say the same to you! I wish Dean and Cas would hurry up though."
"Yeah, they should be-"
On cue, the ghost suddenly seemed to burst into flames. It's 'body' burnt up, charring to a thin, pathetic dust. The mere ashes that remained fluttered gently to the floor.
"I'm guessing they found the body eventually, then," Charlie muttered, staring at the remains of the old murderer who had returned to haunt the families of his victims.
"Looks like it... Come on, let's get out of here."
Sam placed a calm hand on her shoulder, and steered her out of the room. The door swung shut behind them.
They met Dean and Cas outside the front of the house. After Charlie insisted on hugging both of them and Sam, they made their way to the Impala.
"So that's it, yeah? You salted and burned the corpse, we saw the ghost burn up, and now it's gone forever?" Charlie checked. Sam and Dean exchanged looks.
"As far as we know. Why?"
"Well, in my experience, things are never that simple when it comes to hunting, particularly when it's you guys hunting!"
"We're fairly sure it's over now, Charlie," grinned Dean, getting into the driver's seat. As usual, Sam sat shotgun, and Cas and Charlie were in the back.
"You can never be too careful. Maybe we should stay in town for a few days, just to make sure."
Sam raised his eyebrows and smirked.
"Charlie, this wouldn't happen to be because of that cute girl who worked at that bar who gave you her number yesterday, would it?" Sam chuckled, and Dean looked as though he was finally understanding.
"No! Of course not! Well... Yeah. But also the thing about nothing ever being easily finished with you guys!"
She had a point.
"I guess we could stay in town for a few days. Cas, do you have anything you want to add to the discussion? You've been real quiet since we finished. You okay?" Dean looked at him through the car mirror. The guy looked alright, just sitting there perfectly content. But Dean couldn't help wondering if he was okay - he was still fairly new to hunting, after all.
"I'm fine. And staying here sounds fine too."
"It's settled, then. We'll go back to the motel for now and get some rest, then we can sort out our game plan and any new hunts tomorrow. Sound good?"
The rest of the group murmured their agreement, and Dean started the car.
They drove off into the night, and the ghostly house stayed still and silent behind them as they went.
