"Do you always have to have so many books?" Jason said groaning, as he tried to keep the large pile of books in his hands from toppling over.
I rolled my eyes, continuing to poke through the shevles of the fictional section. "Well without books I'd be bored all the time and you know what happens when I'm bored."
Jason made a whimpering noise. "Make-overs..." He shuddered and set the books on table, running his hand through his jet black hair.
I laugh then turn to look at him "Hey you don't look too bad with blue hair. To be honest you should consider it full time."
Jason's hand went to cover his hair while he shook his head. "Don't even go there Roielle, that's inhuman and unattractive on my part."
PAUSE.
In case you haven't figured it out. I'm Roielle, Roielle Dane and that cool little guy I'm talking to is Jason, otherwise known as my best friend. He doesn't seem to understand the importance of book from my perspective, so let me break it down.
Books are love.
Books are life.
If you're a demigod or dauntless type.
Fighting demons and casting spells I love books if you can't tell.
Clever I know, but anyway were in the library looking for a new series to binge read. Well I'm looking anyway. The five books I've already picked doesn't seem like they'll last long.
So we all caught up over there?
Okay good.
GO!
DING!!!
Lunch is over and I have yet to pick out my perfect book. Oh well there's always tomorrow
Jason groans loudly and leans on my shoulder. "Okay Roi we got enough books can we go now, I've got home work to catch up."
I nodded and set my books on the reserve table for tomorrow.
Jason grabbed his book bag and slung it over his shoulder. "Remember you promised to come with me to get a new game tomorrow. If you forget I'll stab you with a seraph blade."
I smiled at his reference. Good thing about best friends is that they know your favorite things and can make you happy at any time.
"Don't worry Jason I won't. We meet at target right?"
He nodded and opened the door for me so I could leave. I walked outside and waited for him to step through as well.
We walked together down the sidewalk toward our houses. It was Fall so yellow and brown leaves littered the ground and flew through the air. Not to mention the cold that's find to the bone.
It's not my favorite season but it is pretty.
We stopped in front of my house as the street lights began to flicker to life.
"Thanks for coming to the library with me Jason, and I won't forget your game debut."
I gave him a quick hugs before he ran off to the next house to avoid being chewed out for being out at night.
I stepped into my own home, warm air and the smell of fried porkchops hit me.
"Mom I'm home!" I yelled out.
I heard shuffling before an answer. "I'm in the kitchen Anna!"
Anna is my middle name and for some reason my mother refuses to call me by my first name. I don't mind it but its a little weird when she calls me that in front of my friends that call me Roi.
By the way I am well aware my initials spell out 'RAD'. Don't dare make fun of it.
I run into the kitchen where my mom was setting up the table for dinner. She had her dirty blonde hair pulled up into a ponytail and a full body apron tied around her. She must have been out in the garden today because her skin was different from its usual eggshell white.
"Hey mom, did you hear from dad? Is he coming home tonight?"
She shook her head while she untied her apron and folded it into a neat square. "No I'm sorry sweetie, but he got stationed over in South Korea again."
"Oh, that's ok." I lied.
My dad was in the army. Well he was a Sergeant so he was always getting shipped off some where. I take after him more than my mom. Besides that I get my dark skin tone from him and my brown eyes, plus we have a lot in common, and by a lot I mean books. He would always read a chapter or two with me before bed when I was little. He also always knew the best books that would interest me. That's why I'm so obsessed with the Mortal Instruments series.
"Your father said he felt terrible he couldn't come but he did send you a gift that came in this afternoon." She placed a small golden box in front of me tied together with a red sparkling bow.
I looked at the box and tilted my head. "Do you know what it is?"
She shrugged and set a plate of pork chops in the middle of the table. "I think he said was a charm of some sort. He found i over in New Orleans at some sort of charms shop. You know how that city is, full of charms and magic."
"Don't forget ghost," I add. "They love ghost."
My mom laughed as I fiddled with the boxes bow. I wondered what the charm looked like. Well there's only one way to find out.
I tugged at the ribbon holding the box together and took it off. Setting that aside, I opened the box to reveal a heart shaped charm on a silver chain. The heart was gold so it shinned beautifully, and the center of it was detailed with lines running in all directions.
My mom looked over my shoulder, gaping at my new necklace. "Oh my, its the second most beautiful thing I've ever seen..."
I looked up at her. "Second?"
She held up her hand flashing her fingers. "My wedding ring."
I nodded in agreement and picked up the charm and held it out at her. "Will you put it on me please?"
She took the necklace while I moved my brunette hair out of the way.
Something about this necklace was magical. It made feel special in a way I can't explain. Maybe it is magic.
What am I saying? I need a book NOW.
