Ally's POV

"Ally!" My stepmom, Katherine, calls from downstairs, annoyance laced in her voice. "Are you almost ready? You're going to be late!"

"Hold on!" I sigh, rubbing my lips together and twisting the lid on my lip gloss.

I grab the brush off of my desk and quickly brush through my straightened hair before grabbing my backpack from my bed, throwing it over my shoulders as I walk downstairs, to meet a very impatient Katherine waiting in the living room for me.

"It's about time." She grabs her keys from their hanger on the wall, and I ignore her, going outside and getting in the car.

You could say we don't exactly have the best relationship.  Her and my dad got together shortly after the divorce. She's really overcritical, and tries to hard to replace my mom. I was miserable when my dad forced me to be the flower girl at their wedding, but I'd do anything for my dad.

When Katherine pulls into a crowded parking lot, I waste no time in getting out of the car, and leaving without a word. I walk up the sidewalk to the blue double doors at the front entrance, and quickly find the main office.

I sit down in one of the chairs while I wait for the only secretary in the office to finish her phone call.

"Sorry for the wait." She looks up from her computer screen. "I assume you're Ally? Your dad called this morning."

I nod, standing up and walking to her desk.

"Just a second, let me print out your schedule for you."

"Okay."

While she types on her computer, I look around the office, taking in my surroundings.

In the waiting area, there are black chairs, and the walls, painted sky blue, are decorated with fliers and various posters with the school logo, and the mascot, the Tallahassee Panthers.

"Okay, here you go, Ally." She extends her arm, and I retrieve my class schedule from her hand.

"Thank you, Mrs.-" I look at the gold name plate that stands on her desk. "Hooper."

She nods, turning in her computer chair. I follow her eyes, to see a girl that I didn't notice when I came in.

"Camila, please come here." The girl looks up from her book, and stands up from her chair, walking towards us.

"Yes, ma'am?"

"Camila, this is Ally, the one I told you about last week." Mrs. Hooper turns back to face me. "Ally, this is Camila, and she'll be showing you to all of your classes, and helping you get to know the school."

Camila smiles at me, and gestures for me to follow her into the hallway. "Okay, so can I see your schedule?"

I nod, handing her the paper in my hand, and she briefly looks it over.

"Okay, so first, I'm going to show you where your locker is. Locker 1509, it's in the math hall. Follow me." I do so, and she hands me my schedule as she leads me down a hallway, to my locker. "Your combination is on your schedule paper, and don't worry, I didn't look."

"Thanks," I look down at the paper, turning the lock to the numbers.

"So, what do you do for fun?"

"Um," I pull open my locker. "I really like to sing, and I used to be on the swim team at my old school, you?"

"I'm in cheer, and I love singing, too."

"Nice," I smile, unloading things from my backpack into my locker, and close it, leaving only a binder and a pencil in my backpack.

"So, right now, it's first period, and if I remember right, you should be in geometry?"

I look down at my schedule and nod.

"Okay, so that'll be not the next classroom, but the one after that, on your left," she points. "Meet me at your locker after this class, and I'll show you to your second period."

...

Camila and I part ways, and I head down the hallway to the choir room, until I come to a door with the name plate outside, reading 'Ms. Sommers'. I walk in, and many students are sitting on the risers, talking among each other. I walk up to her desk.

"H- hi," she looks up from a piece of sheet music. "I'm Ally, I'm new here."

"Ah, yes, I've heard a lot about you." I furrow my eyebrows together, tilting my head to the side in slight confusion. "All good things, don't worry. Your old school contacted me last night. I hear you're very talented."

I shrug and smile awkwardly, not sure how to respond.

"Well, I look forward to hearing your lovely voice." She grabs a clipboard on her desk, with a seating chart on it. "You sit on the top row, the second chair from the right."

"Okay, thank you." I make my way to my seat.

The bell rings, just as I sit down, between two people. On one side is a blonde girl, whose hair is pulled back into a bun, and sits on her phone, carelessly texting away on her iPhone. On my other side is a boy, wearing black jeans and a plain white shirt, with black hair swept onto one side.

"You know, he leans over to whisper in my ear. "It's not very polite to stare."

I blink rapidly, shaking my head to snap out of my trance. "S- sorry."

He chuckles. "It's understandable. I'm irresistible."

He gestures up and down his body with one hand, and I laugh.

"Confident, I see."

He shrugs. "You're new here?"

"Yeah, today's my first day."

"How does it feel to be fresh meat?"

"Like the first day of freshman year all over again."

His lips curve upwards into a smile, and he extends a hand to shake mine.

"I bet. I'm Zayn, by the way."

"Ally."
