"Icecrystal, why are we crossing the border?" Badgerpaw asked, wondering why the patrol was going past the Fishclan boundary. "Because we need prey. Without fresh-kill, we starve. And fishclan has lots of prey, Darkclan doesn't. Why not steal some prey from Fishclan? No one would know." Bumbleclaw said. Badgerpaw stared at the two new warriors. Were they out of their mind?! That was against the warrior code! "I don't want to do this..." Badgerpaw stammered. "Well you have to. I'm leader of this patrol," Icecrystal snarled. "Yea, but I don't like it." Badgerpaw muttered. "And I'm your mentor! You have to listen to me, or I'll make sure you won't see anything but moss for the rest of this moon!" Badgerpaw's ears flattened against his forehead. He knew that his mentor was treachorus, always looking for a fight, but he didn't think that she would go as far as breaking the code. If she wanted to become deputy, then shouldn't she follow the code? Or did she not care? Was it to late to turn back? And object to becoming Icecrystal's apprentice? Not like he had a choice, but it'd make him feel at least a little better. "C'mon; we have to catch some prey, then leave as fast as we can." Bumbleclaw meowed, stalking through some ferns, making sure he was concealed against the dark pine forest. "Yea, let's get on with it," Icecrystal growled, then put her tail up in a warning, before grabbing Badgerpaw by the scruff and pulling him into some mosses, so their scent would be hidden. Badgerpaw wondered why, but then he realized that a Fishclan patrol was coming. It consisted of Brambleheart, a she-cat who seemed very nice at the first gathering he went to, on full-moon. And a tabby he had never seen before, who was walking through the marshes with Juniperclaw, a grey and brown tabby she-cat. Kind of like Thunderclan's Millie, Badgerpaw thought. They looked very similar. But Millie was an ancient clan cat. They couldn't be related! Badgerpaw shook the thought from his mind as the patrol walked past. Bumbleclaw had hidden in a hollow treetrunk, downwind of the Fishclan patrol. Then he realized another cat was with them, a small cat, about his size. An apprentice, he guessed. A brown, white and grey she-cat. She looked very nervous. "Come on, Mintpaw. Aren't you excited to be a 'paw?" Juniperclaw asked. "Y-yes... But what if I'm not good enough?" Mintpaw whimpered. "You'll be the best apprentice the forest has ever seen, Mintpaw. You just have to be confident!" Brambleheart mewed happily. Badgerpaw guessed she was Mintpaw's mentor. Mintpaw looked a little less nervous; Bramblehearts kind words probably cheered her up a lot. Badgerpaw wished his mentor was like that. Icecrystal was really mean. She never gave him any compliments or was even nice to him, she didn't look happy to get an apprentice either. Maybe she had her eye on Littlepaw? Littlepaw was a little overconfident, but she was really fun to patrol with. As the Fishclan patrol faded into the distance, Icecrystal g0t up, and Bumbleclaw did too. "Right lets get to it. Lets stick together though." As we walked on, a few Fox-lengths away, Badgerpaw spotted a mouse. "Icecrystal, there is a mouse over there!" Badgerpaw whispered, pointing with his tail towards the mouse. "Well go get it then," Icecrystal snapped. "I want at least enough prey to feed the elders from you!" "But that will mean multiple trips!" Badgerpaw gasped. "Oh well. That is your problem." She growled. Badgerpaw sighed inwardly and made sure he was down-wind of the mouse, and stalked towards it. When he was close enough to pounce, leapt silently, and before the mouse could get away, he bit its spine. He reflected on how Icecrystal always gave him the hardest jobs; was this because she wanted him to succeed, be better than any other apprentice, or just because she wanted to be popular with the senior warriors, so she could get praise? Badgerpaw growled almost silently, and then thanked starclan for letting him catch this prey, and forgive him for what he had to do. "Good job, Badgerpaw." Bumbleclaw nodded. At least Bumbleclaw was nice... Sometimes. Others he was a real Badger-heart. Either way, Badgerpaw's chest swelled with pride as he picked up his mouse. Maybe Icecrystals meanness would come in handy, and her strictness. It'd make Badgerpaw a better fighter, and hunter. The perfect warrior! Badgerpaw thought. As his eyes glowed. Maybe she wasn't so bad afterall. He realized. Maybe she was like every other warrior, just a little more strict and mean. With that thought in mind, he felt like he hunted much, much better. And he even got more than enough prey for the elders. "Won't the others think it's suspicious when they see us with all this prey, Icecrystal?" Bumbleclaw asked, gaping at all the prey they had cought. "Why should they," Icecrystal started. "After all, it is food, right? Besides, we'll just say that we found a good hunting spot across the border, in unknown forest." Icecrystal rolled her eyes, and grabbed her sparrow, and two mice. "And you won't say anything, right Badgerpaw?" She cast a threatening glare at Badgerpaw. "N-no I won't, Icecrystal." Inwardly, he felt like he wanted to. But he couldn't, if his mentor knew he did tell, she might literally kill him, out of anger. As Badgerpaw picked up his mouse, a crow, and two voles, he realized he couldn't carry his sparrow, bunny and the mice family he got. "I need help, Bumbleclaw." He said, trying not to chew up his prey. "Okay, I'll help you." Bumbleclaw said, flicking his ears. Badgerpaw nodded, not being able to speak. Bumbleclaw had only managed to catch a lizard. Badgerpaw felt a bit sorry for him. As Bumbleclaw picked up the rest of Badgerpaw's prey, they realized Icecrystal had left. "She didn't wait for us...?" Bumbleclaw mumbled, confused. They walked on alone, and when they had reached the border, luckily not running into a border patrol, they didn't see Icecrystal anywhere. "Let's just go back to camp." Bumbleclaw muttered, probably mad that Icecrystal had left them in enemy territory without saying anything. Maybe she is already back at camp? Badgerpaw thought. Suddenly, Icecrystal burst into the clearing, panting hard and had wounds all over her body. In shock, Badgerpaw and Bumbleclaw dropped their prey. "What happened Icecrystal?!" Badgerpaw yowled, and leapt to her side. "G-gingerclan warriors on our territory... M-must get help..." "Go take Icecrystal to Featherfur, quickly Badgerpaw! and take as much prey as you can! I'm going to find the Gingerclan warriors!" Badgerpaw could only nod. He grabbed the mouse, voles and crow, then let Icecrystal lean on his shoulder while trying to get to the camp as fast as he could. They finally made it, not like they were that far away, but the problem was getting down the gorge. "Help!" Badgerpaw yowled. "We need Featherfur! Gingerclan warriors have invaded our territory!" He had dropped the prey, Darkstar, Riverfoot, and treeclaw appeared at the edge of the gorge's long walls. "What happened?"Darkstar yowled up, Badgerpaw slowly started to make his way down with Icecrystal limping and barely awake behind him. "Icecrystal!"Rowanwing gasped. "What happened to her?!" Rowanwing was Icecrystal's mother. Featherfur rushed past Darkstar, and up the Gorges' steep trail, he had marigold and cobwebs in his jaws. "Let me through!" He snapped, and he started to help Icecrystal down. "Explain Badgerpaw!" Darkstar snapped. Badgerpaw explained everything from them being in the clearing. Not anything about the prey stealing though. "Bumbleclaw went out by himself!? Is he insane?" Riverfoot Yelped. "Rowanwing, go get the prey. And Riverfoot, go get warriors battle-ready!" Darkstar snarled, and raced up to the top of the Gorge. "Badgerpaw, you show me where Bumbleclaw raced off to!" Badgerpaw nodded, and spun around and raced up the trail, almost falling multiple times, but not caring.
