I've just realized how at a disadvantage I am when it comes to where I chose to sit. I'm in the very back row. Which, coincidentally, happens to be the exact same row as Prim is in. Which makes it very hard to try to look at her without being too obvious.
If I lean back enough, though, I can see her. Prim, with a dull red pencil holding her dark brown hair up in a messy but at the same time pretty bun. She has her chin in her palm as she listens to our History teacher discussing what is supposed to make sense to us. I can barely understand every other word; she talks too fast and assumes that we know all of this already.
It's a relief to the class when the bell finally rings, letting us have our first recess of the school year. The students rush out, excited to roam the school grounds properly for the first time. The teacher manages to squeeze out the door despite the mass of rushing students.
Drake passes me and pauses. "We're just going to the canteen. I assume you're staying here, seeing as you're so eager to complete your dare." He winks and pointedly walks by Prim's chair with the others.
Surprisingly, the only people left in the classroom are me, Prim, and Katy. Apparently our other classmates couldn't stand staying in our classroom for much longer.
I stand up and slide into the chair closest to Prim. She and Katy both have snacks they brought to school. "Hey guys," I say. As much as I want to be alone with Prim, it looks like Katy will be by her side for some time.
The two turn around simultaneously. "Hi, Luke," Prim says. Katy stays silent.
"Hi, Katy," I say. "You okay?" Judging from what I observed earlier, Katy was usually talkative, at least to Prim.
"I'm fine," says Katy. "It's just that you're so bent on being with Rosie that you're completely ignoring me and taking her away from me at the same time."
"Okay, calm down. Sorry about that," I reply. It's just that Prim is the only one I have to talk to in order to complete my dare. "I won't ignore you anymore. See? I'm talking to you right now."
Katy smiles. She's so cute when she smiles, with her head tilted ever so slightly to the side. Her pink highlight in her jet-black hair almost matches the pink in her eyeglasses.
Prim holds out the plastic she's holding. "Want some?" she asks.
I just realize that I actually do have to go to the canteen since I didn't bring any food. I would've gone by now if not for the dare Drake gave me.
I reach into the plastic bag. "Thanks," I say as I pull out an animal-shaped biscuit covered in chocolate. "You like this kind of stuff?"
"Yeah," she says. "It's delicious. And don't say it's only for kids. Food is food." She pops a biscuit into her mouth and holds out the pack to Katy.
Katy reaches in and holds up a mass of chocolate-covered cookies. "I love it when the companies make errors like this," she says, taking a bite.
I guess making friends with Katy is not such a bad idea. At least it will somehow bring me closer to Prim. And she seems nice.
I see Drake peeking through the window at me. I shake my head, motioning for him to go away. Prim turns to the window, curious. "What are you looking at?"
Thankfully Drake has gone, giving us a clear view of the gazebo outside. The gazebo. Perfect.
"Let's go out," I say, standing up, "to the gazebo. No one's there anyway." I pat Prim's, then Katy's head as I pass them as I head for the door.
"Don't do that!" Katy complains as she swats my hand away. "I'm coming."
I laugh at the expression on her face. "Why? What don't you like about me doing this?" I reach over and pat her head again.
"Just don't," she says, pushing past me out the door. "Come on, Rosie."
Katy walks ahead to the gazebo while I wait for Prim. Prim is heading towards me, snickering. "Katy's so cute sometimes."
We walk side by side to the gazebo. There are a few inches of stone that go around the inside of the gazebo, acting as a seating area. Katy is sitting on the side, swinging her legs and holding a chocolate bar in her hand.
Prim and I sit down on the cold, hard stone. Prim crumples the empty pack of cookies and stuffs it into her pocket. I notice for the first time the brand of Katy's chocolate. I fail to hold in my laugh.
The two turn to me. I laugh even more.
"What is wrong with you?" Katy asks, holding in a laugh herself.
I tilt my head at her and reply, "Nothing's wrong with me, Kitkat."
At this point even Prim bursts into giggles. "Kitkat!" she says. "What made you think of that lovely nickname?"
I point at the wrapper of the chocolate Katy was eating. "KitKat" is written in bold letters across the length of the bar.
"Okay. It's final now. I'm calling you Kitkat." I say, catching my breath. "It sounds like your real name as well!"
We sit for a good long while before Katy replies. "I'm so going to have to think of a nickname for you."
The bell rings, ending our break, and we get up, still giddy from our moment. We see the mob of our classmates rushing to the classroom from the canteen and Prim gives out a squeal. She pulls us both by our hands through the door and we manage to get back to our seats before our classmates push their way through the door in a mad rush to get to their seats before the teacher comes.
