~UPDATED~
The night brings many things: Stars, the Moon, campfires, parties, sleepovers with your best friends, fireflies, and Ding-Dong-Ditching. All of which bring joy or laughs. But in my town, the night brings far more worse. Ever since Summer started, weird things have been happening. People have gone missing, dogs bark uncontrollably, and blackouts that last for days. None of this has happened in Portland before.
I sunk my head into my pillow, relieved thats it was nice and cold. I sighed as my phone started vibrating on the wooden nightstand by my bed. I lazily tried to push myself into an upright position, extending my arm to the cellular device that was barely out of my reach. I don't need it. I thought, seeing that I would have to get out of my warm and comfortable position to read the text.
I flop back down on my pillow and pull the silky blanket over my shivering body. I close my eyes once again and try to fall asleep to the pitter-pattering of the rain against the roof. My windowless bedroom seemed eerie in the darkness. A single line of light covering the plush carpet of my floor, seeping through the door frame.
My phone startles my sleep once again. A familiar ringtone this time, breaking the silence. It was my best friend, Spencer. Why was she calling me so late? I decided to sit up and answer it. I soon regretted my decision as a chill ran through my body.
"Hello?" I ask, my raspy voice barely audible.
"Payson? Where are you?" She questions frantically.
"In my room. Why? What's going on?" I ask, the tone of her voice was freaking me out
There was a strange noise was coming from upstairs, directly above me. I reached over and switched on the lamp, a teal blue now covering my walls.
THUMP. THUMP.
"I'm coming over. DON'T, and I mean DON'T leave your room. Lock the door. Don't turn on any lights or make any noise. I'll be over in 5 minutes. Please do what I say. Please?" She pleads
"Ok. I promise, but will you tell me what's going on?" I tried putting all the information through my head. It still wasn't making sense at all.
THUMP. THUMP.
"theree's someone in the house, upstairs." I say in a harsh wisper, "My mom's not home, What if someone is breaking in? Spencer!" I stuttered through my words, I couldn't even make sense of what I just said.
"I know! No time to explain. But Michael will get there before I do! Bye, stay in your room!"
She hung up and I was speechless. What was going on? Did she mean Michael Grimes? Why was he coming to my house? What was that thumping from upstairs? Why was she so urgent to keep me in my room? Why was she even coming over? I had too many questions running through my head right now.
THUMP. THUMP.
I shut off my side lamp and hid under my covers. I unlocked my iPhone, the light seeping through the thin blanket I was under. Trying to get my mind off of things, I checked my instagram.
I heard the front door open, hitting the wall in the process. Was it Michael? I slightly peeked over the edge of my bedding. Faint footsteps soon became louder, coming down the hall. Towards my room. Then they stopped. The shadow of their feet falls along my floor.
There was creak from the floor, as if the stranger was shifting their weight. Light then spreads across my room, a puff of warm air wrapping around me, seeping through my thin cover. More footsteps. It was all I could hear. My heart was pounding so hard, I think the intruder could hear it.
"Spencer told you to lock the door." The anonymous voice whispers, appearing closer to me then I had thought. Michael. The door then shuts, closing us off from the life outside. Darkness surrounded us once again. The covers then fly off of my shivering body, my eyes wide in surprise, staring up at Michael and his beauty.
