I was beginning to realize that homeroom would always be a nightmare. Now don't get me wrong, I genuinely liked geography but Tilloway and her hatred for me had ruined it. It was a constant back and forth between us; usually in front of the whole class. As soon as the bell rang, I grabbed Lucas and sped as quickly as I could out of the door.
"What's the rush?" He asked. His situation with Riley was still a work in progress but at least there was progress.
"That teacher has it out for me!" Tilloway had yelled at me twice in that class. Twice.
"To be fair, you should have just read the chapters instead of giving a speech on how, I quote 'homework is detrimental to creativity and expression of present day youth'." I felt myself heat up again at the thought of it. Everyday there's a new argument and everyday there is a new reason to dislike that woman.
"She wanted us to read 150 pages! Does she really expect us to do all that? Does she not realize we have other classes too?"
"Which you don't do the homework for." I resisted my urge to get angry at him for defending her. The fact he was making sassy side comments showed he was becoming his old self again. The thought of that helped calm me a bit; but only a bit.
"Lucas! Maya! Just the two I was looking for!" Tom Greenwood said as he ran up to us. He was in our homeroom and I had only talked to him once before. There weren't any defined 'cliques' in our school but it was easy to see the ones that could be deemed popular and Tom Greenwood completely fell into that group. He had everything you needed to be 'popular'; funny, tall, nice, and okay he was pretty attractive too.
"You couldn't have been looking too hard seeing as we all just walked out of the same class?" My anger was calming but I still couldn't help making at least one snippy comment.
"Haha, you're right but I was meaning to talk to you guys." His flashed a quick smile. Tom Greenwood was very attractive. "So, I'm throwing this party on Friday and I was hoping you two could come?"
"Thanks but I don't really think that's our-" Lucas begun.
Something about Tom Greenwood made me lose all sense and before I even knew it I cut Lucas off. "Sure, we'll go."
"Awesome! So I'll see you two at 456 Appleton Avenue this Friday at around 9?"
"Definitely!" And with one more smile he was gone. However, when I turned to Lucas there was anything but a smile on his face; just a very perplexed expression.
"Why would you do that Maya?"
"Because I told you I was going to help get you out of this funk you're in and what better way to do that than a party?"
"Since when do you go to parties?" He asked skeptically. It was true. I had never been to anything other than a birthday party and I didn't even go to too many of those either. I never understood what was so exciting about them but hey, it's time to try new things. And when someone that attractive invites you to their party, it's really rude to say no.
"Since you needed me to." And if it helped Lucas, that was a bonus too.
At lunch I gave Riley the full run down about the party.
"You got invited to a high school party? Maya, this is it. This is where you ascend into the popularity you were destined to be in and I stay here as a dork, with absolutely no coordination." I chuckled at Riley's dramatics. I never understood why she always thought I was going to leave her. She was the one everyone liked. Most people tended to just gravitate to her for some reason.
