The sky was a color of grey that reminded me of dog vomit.
Happy birthday to me.
My name is Skylar Airborne .
To this day, 1 year ago my beautiful baby sister was taken away by the monsters in which I've spent the rest of my days tracking and learning about.
This is the story of how I died.
Looking back on all these things I've done on this twisted adventure, I should've known something was going to happen. The ever present gloom surrounding our town on the morning of May 1st 2012 should've warned me. Now as I lay on the cold cement floor of a hotel basement I recall everything that's happened to me over these disgusting months until the day my darling innocent sister was taken away. If I could laugh I would. It's so ironic to think I spent this whole time trying to save her but now it's I who needs saving. My beautiful sister hasn't aged a bit, I could tell by her innocent face. The only difference now was the evil grin replaced that beautiful smile and coal black eyes replaced her bright blue ones. She watched the life fade away from me while I pondered what led to this.
It's my birthday and nothing could ruin how I feel right now. Layla, my baby sister (who is now 4) is sitting in my back seat as My dad drives towards home. Even this rain couldn't ruin my excitement! Our family is going to dinner at my favorite diner, Lucky Sam's. I pull in the driveway to my waiting mother who's sitting on the porch enjoying a cigarette. "MOMMY!" Layla hurriedly unbuckled herself and rushed to our mothers waiting arms. "Baby girl! Do you know what today is?" My mother asked kindly. "It's Sky's birthday mommy."
"That's right baby. Did you say happy birthday yet?" Layla ran to me and I picked her up in a spinning hug. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY SKY I LOVE YOU!"
"I love you too Layla." I couldn't help but smile. She's so precocious to our family. We went in the house to gather up the rest of my family. My brother and grandma sat in my living room waiting for us. "How old are ya now? 21?" My brother teased.
"Actually I'm 14. Thank you very much." I teased back. "We off to Sam's?" My uncle questioned as he walked into the living room from the kitchen. We all piled into my moms station wagon and headed downtown. The rain drizzled just enough to make your hair frizzy but not enough to make you soaking wet. I peered out the window to see a strange sight. Three young boys who should be with their mother stood on the other side of the road watching us momentarily park while waiting for a red traffic light to turn green. The way they stared made me on edge so I shifted in my seat uncomfortably. "Skylar why are you so fidgety?" My brother complained. "I like it. She looks like she's dancing!" Layla innocently teased and squeezed her little teddy bear. "No I just.. Find it strange to see such young boys standing out in the rain. It's such a grey day." My family nodded in agreement while we pulled away from the traffic light. A few more minuets and we were pulling into the diner. Smells of greasy food wafted through the air. We followed the scent in a trance until we took our familiar seats in the corner of the diner. A waitress who looked like a server straight from a stereotyped diner in the 50's approached our booth and took our orders. My family chatted away while I zoned out daydreaming about boys in my class... Well one boy in particular caught my eye. He's not much taller then me, he has dark brown eyes that are so big he reminds me of a puppy when he looks at me a certain way. His name is Connor Delroy and he is the most handsome boy I've ever seen in my life. "Right Sky?" My moms question snapped me back into attention. "What?"
"I asked if I was correct when I told Grandma that you had gotten that spot in the newspaper."
"Oh. Yes that's right. I'm the youngest journalist on the team. To this day I'm 14 years of age!" I claimed proudly. "So what is it you do?" My grandma looked puzzled. I don't think she understands my choice in a career. I want to be an author. As of right now I'm practicing by writing a column on Urban Legends. Mrs. McJean is the head of the news station in the center of our small town known as BlackLake. We moved here as soon as Layla was born so she could be in a better school district then the inner city school I grew up in. I'm a graduating freshman and when school starts up again I'll be a sophomore, this makes me the youngest member to have a permanent position on the news team. "Well grandma... I pretty much look for explanations on the unexplainable. If I can then its just to spook people. Halloween stuff I guess."
