"Mommy! I want a big present for my birthday!" I said, running around the room.
"Okay. What so you want?" Mother asked me.
"Anything! Me want big present! Very big! And pretty, too!" I exclaimed.
"Are you sure? Can you handle a very big present? You're only five," she teased. I nodded, "I can handle it." She walked outside and closed the door door behind her saying, "Be a good girl at home, okay?"
"Okay!" I said, happily walking to the living room. Watching her from the window, she walked int the car and Father drove away. After a few hours, I wondered why they weren't home yet. The home phone started ringing.
"Hello?" I answered, picking up the phone. "Mommy? Daddy? Where are you?" I didn't get a reply. Suddenly I heard a deep voice saying, "Is this Michelle?"
"Yes. Where's my mommy and daddy?" I asked impatiently.
"I'm sorry to say, Ms. Michelle Suzuki, your parents are dead. Couple of minutes ago, your parents was hit by a truck and died," he said.
"MOMMY! DADDY!" I cried, screaming at the phone. He hung up and I slid my back against the front door crying.
"Mommy. Daddy. Everyone. I want to die," I whispered, grabbing a knife. Before I stabbed myself, a man walked into the house. When he saw me with a knife, he immediately grabbed the knife out of my hand and brought me outside.
"You don't know how much you mean to this world, right?" He asked furiously.
"Uncle? What are you doing here? Where's Mommy and Daddy?" I asked him.
"Didn't the police tell you? They are dead! Hurry up and get into the car. You can't say here," he said, dragging me into his car. I could see a hint of happiness in his eyes, as if he wanted them to die. Looking out the window, I could see rain pouring on the car and lightning in the sky. Thunder boomed as he drove me to a gray building. He unlock the door to the building and I saw old candles and spider webs everywhere. "You will live here. Everything will be paid and you can get anything you want like a spoiled child." He slammed the door behind him and locked it without another word.
When he left, I took out a silver chain with a silver lock. "Keep this, Michelle and you will remember everything that is important to you. This is the lock of your memories. There is a key as well. Whoever has the key unlock happiness and banish sorrow." My mother's words echoed in my head as I put the lock inside my pocket.
"Mommy. Daddy. I love you," I whispered, brushing the dust off my bed. I walked towards my backyard and laid on a freash batch of grass. Looking up at the sky, I could see and huge collection of white dots above me. "Good night Mommy. Good night Daddy."
