21st March, Kindergarten

I clutched my Barbie lunchbox, my eyes quickly filling up. "Come on sweetie," I turned to see my mother, a large smile on her face. Her large dark brown eyes twinkled merrily in the sun. "It's only for some time, I'll promise to get back." She encouraged. Shuffling forward, I was embraced by a young woman, who was wearing lots of flowery perfume.

"Hello, you must be Sapphire," even her voice was flowery. I looked nervously at the new woman. Her blonde hair was down, wafting about her, and she had large green eyes. "I'm Mrs Garnell, I'm going to be your teacher," she said, smiling warmly. Slightly nodding my head, I whipped to wave at my mother. Before I could run back, I was gently pushed into the classroom. Large posters covered the wall, and small tables and chairs were arranged around the room. Many were already sitting down, but two boys were arguing, standing up.

"Chimchar is better!"

"No, Pikachu is!"

"Electric types are terrible against water Pokèmon!"

"So are fire ones!"

"Chimchar!"

"Pikachu!"

"CHIMCHAR!"

"PIKACHU!"

"Actually, Snivy would be better, as grass types are good against water Pokèmon." I said matter-of-factly.

"You're a GIRL." One of the boys arguing piped up, his grey eyes narrowing.

"And?" I replied, my eyes copying his.

"But you're not MEANT to like Pokèmon, and you've got GIRL GERMS!" The other said, shaking his head, so his dark curls going everywhere.

"I think you're both idiots for thinking that girls don't play certain games."

I said again, my confidence rising. "Why should we play only girl games?"

"But - but - you like BARBIE!" The curly haired boy pointed to my lunchbox. Suddenly a tiny girl stood up. She had brown eyes and short brown hair in a bob. She had a scary look on her face, which made all three of us shrink away. She smiled at me, and I immediately relaxed. Phew, she didn't want to kill me!

"I agree, though I try and include Squirtle in everything. My name's Lily. What's yours?"

"Sapphire." I replied.

"No way."

"Totally wrong."

"Two girls who like Pokèmon?"

"Against the rules!' The boys interrupted, each agreeing with one another.

"Now, now, this can be resolved at lunch, and boys, there are no such things as girl germs!" Mrs Garnell wafted her way over.

"But Sam -"

"Samuel Grace and Alexander Valdez!" The teacher cut in again. "How dare you discriminate against these two girls and talk back!"

"Di-di-dis-disc-disc-cri-mate?" The blonde haired and grey eyed boy said uncertainly.

"Yup, it means to unfairly judge someone." I said brightly. Everyone stared at me, Miss Garnell proud, Lily disbelieving, and Sam and Alex shocked. "Um... Well... I read?" I shrugged, trying to explain. Miss Garnell just smiled warmly, and motioned to the empty seat next to where Lily was sitting before. Sam and Alex were given a scathing look before they shuffled back to their places behind us.
