Hajime Saito was always a quiet boy who hardly showed any feelings or interest into anything except swords. He was basically a pro for a 13 year old. He's not like a regular samurai thought. He wields his blades in his left hand. He was always bored at home, he had no siblings or any friends. His parents were always busy with work. Saito would always practice swinging his sword outside in the backyard. Everybody in town shunned him for nt wielding his sword properly. When ever someone passed hime, hey would give him looks or even talk under their breath about him.
One day, he passed a kid who was being picked on and was trying his best to fight back. Saito rushed in and helped, but mid-way he was stopped by a tall gentlemen with long black hair. He looked up to the man and he backed away a little and fell on his butt. The tall gentlemen turned around and offered Saito a hand. Saito was reluctant but took his hand. "Are you okay?" The gentlemen asked Hajime. "Y-yeah.." The boy replied. The gentlemen was surprised, he noticed that Hajime's blade were placed on his right side instead of his left. "You must wield your katana with your left hand right?" The boy was shocked that the guy wasnt offended like the others. "Y-yeah." "That's great! I've never meet anyone that wields a blade left handed. Want to challenge our students at the dojo? You must be really strong right?" "S-sure..." With that the gentlemen picked up the injured boy that was being picked on and threw him over his shoulder, he grabbed Saito's hand and started to walk them to the dojo.
Saito was surprised in how much effort the student put in the matches. The guy let go of Hajime's hand and set the boy down. Hajime's eyes were sparking and was too eager to wait for an opponent. "Oh, I forgot to ask you, but whats your name? Mines is Hijikata Toshizou." Hijikata said with a smile. "Saito.... Saito Hajime.." "Nice to meet you Saito-kun. How would you like to challenge our second strongest student in the dojo in a wooden sword fight?" "What about the first strongest?" Hajime asked. Hijikata chuckled a little and then pointed at the boy laying on the floor. "That number 1. Student happens to be in a little mischief and got himself hurt. Onces Okita-kun heals you may challenge him." Hajime nodded and replied. "I'll challenge the second strongest then." "I like your confidence and eagerness, wait here, let me get him. Masumune! I've got someone who wants to challenge you in a wooden sword fight."
Out came running a boy who looked around 15. He had his sword in his hand and greeted Saito. "Kondou, can you be the ref?" Hijikata asked. "Haha, sure." The two boy stood infront of each other preparing to fight, they both waited for the signal to start. "Ok, ready.....go." Both charged at each other. Masumune took the first thrust, but Saito dodged. Saito shortly ended the match when he hit the opponent on the side. "I'm amazed, hey where are you from?" Kondou the young instructor of the dojo asked. "Edo..." The boy replied back in a low tone. "Haha, you're pretty strong that you won that match. No one was able to beat him except you and Okita. How about you join our dojo to train more?" The boy looked around and then looked to the side. "O-okay.. I hope to learn more from you sensei.""Haha, no, I want Hijikata to teach you. He's better than me." The boy turned around and faced Hijikata. "Umm.. I-I hope to learn more from you, Hijikata-sensei." "Come with me, let me show you around." Saito followed him quickly. To Saito, this was the first time in his life where he felt like he belonged.
