Chapter Five
News
I sat down in Rochelle's office.
"We'll here we are again," she said, sitting down on her chair, staring at me.
"Am I in trouble?" I say, childishly.
"No, actually, quite the opposite," she says, acting like an elementary school principal.
This was all very peculiar.
"So," I cough. "What did you want to tell me?"
"Well, I have some good news. You have been very outstanding in the past few days." She tells me. "And we think you're ready for a somewhat, bigger role in this community.
My cheeks go red. "Thank you,"
There is a sudden knock at the door.
"Who is it?"
"Marcus Cumbria," a voice calls.
A shiver. It's a guy. Now what's a guy doing here?
"Come in," Rochelle says, smiling.
Marcus comes into the office and sits down next to me. "Hi, I'm Marcus," he says.
"Ashley," I say, shaking his hand.
"Now you're probably wondering why I brought the two of you in here." Rochelle chimes in. "Marcus has been here for almost a month now and, like you, has shown vast improvements in his time here."
Marcus looks at me and I look back. Ugh.
"Anyway, I have decided for you too do be partners in our little model world."
"Uh, I'm confused." Marcus says.
"I second that," I say, nervously.
"Well, you two are obviously not the smartest grapes on the vine," she remarks. "What I mean is, you two will be public partners, doing shoots together and well, doing everything together."
I gasp. "So we're like, dating or something? And doing the shoots together?"
"I didn't even think if that! What a great idea! Yes, you two will be in a relationship and in so many shots together! And you'll be famous! And I'll be famous!" Rochelle starts laugh and mutter I a crazy kind if way I don't like.
"But," Marcus turns to me. "No offense I don't really like her in that way."
Rochelle stops laughing. "I don't care! Fake or not fake you two will be stars! I don't care how you do it. Get to know each other! I don't care. You can go. And this boyfriend, Ashley, IS authorized."
Rochelle spins around on her chair and exits through the door behind Marcus and I.
"She's crazy," Marcus says to me. "But I guess we have to."
"Tomorrow 8 o'clock, the pizza place down the road." I hear myself say.
"What," Marcus cries.
"Well, I guess we have to get to know each other. God knows what were going to be doing," I reply.
"Alright then, bye." Marcus says, getting up and walking out.
And then I realize the reality of all. Somehow, Rochelle knows about my feelings for Fletcher. I don't know how she could though. Am I that obvious? Well, that doesn't really matter. The truth is this is how she's getting back at me. And maybe it's for the best.
But somehow, it just doesn't seem right. Because today I've noticed him and I think he likes me back.
...
As soon as I walk out of the office, I walk straight into Fletcher.
He looks down on me. "How was the boss' office. I saw a guy walk out."
I don't had the heart to tell him yet.
"Uh, it was nothing important," I lie.
He peers at me more closely. "What's going on? We are friends, aren't we?"
I sigh. "Of course we are, I'll tell you tomorrow. I uh, have to go."
I give him a friendly hug and walk away. I can't tell him. Not yet. I have tonight to figure out how I'm going to do it. I don't want to.
I don't have any interest in breaking his heart.
