As I walked away from the stranger, I could feel a strong pull towards him, but brushed it off. Just then Alonzo walked up to me and put his arm around me.
"Hey you," he said. Alonzo was one of the few people we'd allowed into our circle and we've never felt a sense of regret of any sort for doing so. As I tuned around to continue walking, I heard what I thought was a growl , causing me to spin around and look directly into the arrogant boy's eyes.
It changed from the grey-blue colour they originally are, to a strange shade of gold.. Weird. Alonzo had a worried look on his face and gestured for me to walk away, never taking his arm off of my shoulder. Men and their egos.
"Lonz, what just happened? What on earth was that?" I still shocked.
"I have no idea chica," he said, "I think the Alpha let Zaire get the better of him."
Alpha, Zaire - What on earth could he possibly be talking about?!
"What do you mean Alpha, Lonz?" I asked, desperately seeking answers. A look of fear crossed his face for a brief second, but was quickly masked by his smile so brutally handsome, it should be illegal.
"I have no idea," he said while laughing, "I was watching Twilight with Heleny last night and now I've got all this Jacob Black shit stuck in my head."
"I'm surprised you remember his name," I said while smirking, "I might just think that you have a secret crush on him." I said, laughing. Alonzo was one of the few nice guys left in this school. He could socialise and communicate without having to raise his voice and this may have been why many women swooned around him while the guys hated him. He has never been with a girl but has had more than his fair share of first kisses.
"Oh," he retorted, "the way you way you have a crush on Rowayde," he said, laughing because he knew he'd hit a nerve. Rowayde was one of the better known 'pleasures' to the boys of the school. When we first came to this school, she'd started out trying to seduce my brothers and later on Alonzo. I'd made it clear to her that my brothers and friends were off limits.
When it came to my family and friends, I'd assassinate anyone who posed as a threat and not give a second thought to what I'd done. After losing my parents, I realised that some things were more important than keeping peace - keeping my family safe.
During the self-defense classes, I came across a very intriguing trainer, his knowledge on weapons was impressive and I found that I could learn a lot from him, but that's a story for another day.
"Helloo... Anybody home?" Lonz asked while knocking on my forehead, "Ek sien die ligte is aan maar daar is niemand tuis nie!"
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked, clearly confused.
"It's an Afrikaans expression my mother always uses," he explained, "they lived in South Africa before they moved here, it means that you're here, but you're not really here, if that even makes sense. Does it? " he asked, him being the confused one now.
Alonzo's mother, Leneve, was one of the coolest adults I knew. She was fluent in quite a few languages, amongst others, English, Afrikaans, Swearing, Sarcasm and BS. She could tell when we were lying before the words even left our mouths which is why we opted for honesty when it came to her.
She was lenient in punishment and treated us all as her own. This was not an easy task, managing 7 teenagers so close to each other that you'd think they were a gang of thieves. And much to her surprise, we could make plans without saying a single word and only sharing looks and the occasional smile thrown her way.
We were Nevey's handful and she loved every second. Sometimes, she'd spend the night over with Al, Lonz's father, and we'd feel like one big family. This always meant so much to us and we could never think of ways to make it up to them.
"Would you stop zoning out on me? " Alonzo asked, sighing out of frustration, "it's rather annoying, speaking to an inanimately animate object!"
This guy and his way with words... I hope that he is granted mercy from the language Gods!
